Why do cyclists cut to the front of the line at stop signs and red lights?

I think because they CAN.

Still, it doesn't make it right.

The problem is the 85% of cyclists who don't. They ride the wrong way on one-way streets, run stop signs, run red lights, weave through traffic, etc.

I once almost hit a cyclist (downtown - Dupont area). It was totally my fault - I just wasn't paying close enough attention. The guy absolutely chewed me out - went on a huge rant about how drivers in DC are terrible about cyclists. I held my tongue, but I often wish I had chewed him out right back.

Good to play it cool. Many cyclists, with their affected mannerisms, crave these encounters.

They do it because they don't want to get hit.

One thing that does bother me is when bikes go to the front at a red light and then park in the right-hand turn lane so other cars can't make the right turn on red. It bothers me a lot. If you go to the front, then at least get to the center lane.

On the other hand, I don't mind bikers who slow down, look both ways, and then roll through seldom-used intersections without impacting traffic too much. Every situation is different, but I get that biking is a lot easier when you can use momentum and in many cases it seems harmless to roll through an intersection easily. This is not true at every intersection, though.

Because they have a death wish?

There's an intersection near my house that always has a million bikers around on weekends. At the light I stop as far right as possible so that bikes cannot pass me, it really pisses them off!

Why would you choose to be intentionally obnoxious like that?

It's actually the opposite. Cars are much more likely to accidentally hit you if you don't do this.

Seriously. Must have some kind of personality disorder.

It's legal. Read the thread.

If I approach a traffic light, I get in my place directly behind the car in front of me. If I were to go to the front of the line, then all the cars I passed in order to do so would then have to re-pass me once the light changes. It seems like that is the more dangerous approach for everyone involved - or am I missing something?

Glad they do it! Anything to get you way way way in front of me!
The THE FUCK out of traffic you assholes! you hold up traffic, cause accidents because drivers are trying to avoid you...end up swerving into other lanes causing chain reaction accidents, all the while you're cycling along oblivious to your surroundings like the assholes that you all are.

Good, because I save my harshest criticism for jerkoff motorists who make whiny complaints about seeing a bicycle not stop fully for some stop sign. Whoop-de-shit.

I'm not the pp but the reason it infuriates me when bikes don't stop for stop signs and red lights is bc I don't want to accidentally kill them with my car. If you keep doing that you will eventually be hit by someone who either didn't see you in time or thought you were going to follow the rules of the road so proceeded through the intersection when it was his turn. And I have plenty of criticism for the motorists and pedestrians who do dumb things too. People around here whether on bikes, cars or walking are so f-ing entitled and that's the real problem. I feel like it's gotten worse as more millennials have moved in.

I'll pass you if you do it. I'm one of those drivers who allow bikes the lane, and I'll ride behind you for miles rather than pass you in your lane. But if I've just held up traffic for miles (thus proving that I won't pass you regardless), and after I finally get around you you pass me in my lane at a stoplight or red light? Then my sympathy is gone.

You have chosen the perfect area of the country for yourself.

This bugs me too! They want cars to "share the road" but they don't follow traffic rules.
