Unless the PP happens to be a parent her advice that you should plan a random kids party around the possibility that there might be an observant Orthodox Jew in the class is just bizarre. Almost every children's birthday party my kids have ever attended has been held on a Saturday, including those held by our friends who are Jewish. OP, go about your very cutesy business and don't worry about the remote possibility that it will conflict with someone's religious obligations. Even if there is a conflict, extending the invitation is hardly an offensive gesture. |
I'm the PP. I'm a parent. My point was that there are all sorts of Jewish ppl out there--observant and not. I did not say to plan the party around orthodox Jews. Read it again please. I thought she should plan an afternoon party on either weekend day so as not to interfere with church or shul. FWIW, the OP said she didn't know about Judiasm. I gave her a small lesson. No harm done. I'm sorry you found it bizzare. |
Probably because those holidays don't expect you to observe sabbath or not attend gatherings on those days. |
There's no need to get upset, folks.
I really appreciate the advice and the small lesson. Now let me get the cutesy stuff started... so excited! Thanks a bunch! |
OP, for the love of everything holy to whatever religion your classmates may or may not subscribe to...
Pin a note to the classroom door or send an evite to the parents proposing a park playdate on a weekend morning or late afternoon this fall. Give your name, contact info and name of your kid. Do NOT send out engraved, printed or otherwise designed paper invites. Do NOT turn this into a Fall Festival with cookie decorating, scarecrow stuffing, pony rides or whatever other shit is fermenting in the back of your brain. Stopping off at the park for 45 minutes sounds fun and relaxed. Having to clean icing off picnic tables and/or soccer uniforms while negotiating the consumption of the just-completed sugar bomb sounds like a total PITA. |

how about saturday afternoon, after nap time though. its just that after a long working week i hate having to go to something that will require me to get up and be out at an early time. I know i have to be up with the kids, but i like to be able to just chill around the house on saturday and not run around like i have to during the work week |

OP, I shun everything crafty but even I adore all things paper: stationery, invites, etc. I love the invite idea and don't think it's going overboard at all. For heaven's sake, folks: you just jam it into your printer, bang out some invite and make sure it's centered, and hit print. Nothing crazy. |
Did not know Host was hot. Will attend. |

How could you possibly roll your eyes at that? ![]() ![]() ![]() |
OP here. I'm really pleased to hear from everybody. And even happier to see that just by throwing this small get together we'll be able to weed out people like some of the PP's. I would hate to have to cut people off once it's too late and come to realize we've wasted our time. |
