No, Janney is $550 per child, $1050 for two, and $1400 for three or more. Oh, well those are the real "Student Support Fees." And yes, there's also the $10 PTA charge which includes a directory. What a bargain! |
| New yu ying parent. Will not be joining the PTA b/c of fee. We can afford to pay but I disagree with the premise that you need to pay to vote. Will also not be attending meetings or volunteering. |
no, this is the suggested contribution. PTA membership is $10. You become a voting member of the PTA with the $10 fee. |
Actually, when you signed up you agreed to volunteer 20 hours per year. What a wonderful parent you are. Hope your kid gets out of school exactly what you plan to put into it. |
Why don't you lobby for a change in policy instead? All these donations and yes even fees are there to benefit your child/children. I am not a Yu Yiing parent and I don't like the policy. But simply not going to meetings or volunteering is worse in my opinion. |

Because if you challenge the status quo at this school, you will bring the wrath of the administration down on your family.
That's why every YY issue eventually makes it's way to DCUM. It's the only way to dissent, in an anonymous forum. |
| To the previous poster- When I joined the school I agreed to volunteer 20 hours to the school not the PTA. I also do not mind paying money to the school when needed(such as the $100 supply fee) However, I will not pay money just so I can vote on PTA issues. The pay to vote policy is ridiculous! |
In regards to your comment about the wrath of the administration- I used to believe this also. And then I did have an issue and I did challenge it with the school, the principal, the director and the board. I have not had an issue since. My child receives an equal and quality education. The admin does not bother me. And, I get along perfectly fine with the other parents at the school. I think if more parents stood up and came out of the shadows if they had issues, the bogey man aspect might disappear. Also, I hope that your kid is enjoying that brand spanking new playground that the members of the PA purchased. It was purchased with donated money, fundraising and sweat equity from the members of the PA. But, your attitude is typical of many people in DC. It's all about you and yours, and to he'll with everybody else. |
| I know I personally gave a large donation (for our family) towards the playground. It doesn't mean I like yy's admin or this new pa policy. We won't be giving anymore as a result. |
| As I stated earlier, I am happy to volunteer both my time and money but not for something I can't support. Excluding some members of the community from voting because they can't pay a $100 dollar fee is absurd. The fee should be a suggested contribution. My position does not make me any less appreciative of past efforts made by the PTA. It also does not mean that I don't support the school. I will just be careful to bypass the PTA and channel my time and money directly to the school. |
Such nonsense. There's a discussion of this very issue taking place on the YY parent listserv right now (where, incidentally, nobody is suggesting, "Hey, this makes a colorable excuse to avoid paying"; instead, folks are discussing ways to pay more in order to "sponsor" families for whom the $100 fee would present difficulty). |
Hilarious. Let's see: you were full of excitement to join the PTA and volunteer and attend meetings, etc., but now that you know the PTA wants to help the school collect the supply fee, you're so put off that you're opting out entirely. What a huge loss your presence will be. |
Who are you?? You always post this as if YY sent two thugs to your house to rough you up or something!! Get a grip and quit spreading the poison. I've complained before to the YY admin--sometimes it was resolved, sometimes not, but NEVER did I feel that revenge/wrath was visited upon me or my DC. |
well then, take your toys and go home. |
And such a discussion it is! Two people out of hundreds of families have chimed in other than the PA reps. The two people are new families and don't know better. |
