Steve Jobs has died

You sound like my MIL. According to her, people live to squirrel away money they can 'enjoy' when they 'retire'. And in order to 'enjoy', one needs to rent a beach house in Rehoboth.

Steve Jobs really enjoyed doing what he was doing, otherwise he could have 'retired' twenty years ago. For some people, it's about the journey, not the destination.

Life is so precious. Yes, he impacted the world in a great way, but in the end, it's all just technology. It doesn't matter that much. We'd all be fine if Apple never existed. If I were him I'd have a ton of regrets because you know he did little else but live and breathe Apple. Who knows, maybe that was OK for him. But I have a hard time believing anyone in his position wouldn't have had at least some regrets.

you need to listen to his Stanford commencement address. He loved his work; so since he loved what he did, it wasn't "work" as we think of it (i.e. a job). I doubt he has any regrets.

We'll probably see something after his estate is settled. There is no need to leave $6 billion to family.

Says you. And who are you to decide what someone else's "needs" are?

If a human needs six billion dollars, then there are only 42 people in America who are not suffering.

Of course, no one "needs" six billion dollars. But for you or anyone else to state that "there is no need to leave $6b to family" is the height of arrogance. And jealousy on your part, I might add. It's his money. He made it honestly, at least in part because he's smarter and more motivated than you are.

Deal with it.

Here's the thing, 11:41, you're no Steve jobs either. So settle down.

This was really low. You should be ashamed.

I don't care what you think about anything.

Obviously...you lack a soul. I feel sorry for you.

Ya got that right.

But unlike the poster who is so blinded by the fact that he didn't give away every penny that he made to the poor impoverished souls of the planet that s/he cannot see his contributions to humanity, I stand in awe of his brilliance. I can appreciate that alone and be grateful that there are people who are this smart in our midst, and are willing to use those smarts to progress our world. That they profit off of that is expected and proper and deserved.

You see, it's not all about me.

Contrary to popular misconception, Steve Jobs didn't actually invent all the apple gadgets in his basement, he hired the right inventors and licensed/bought patents of already invented products to build great products. That's why Apple is always going at it with Google, RIMM and Nokia, the ITC has probably had it up to here with their suits.

He is a visionary alright but I don't get the comparison to Edison and the last I checked, Apple is a company not Steve Jobs.

That is exactly why he is being compared to Edison. Do you think Edison has over a 1000 patents to his name because he invented each and every device? He was an entrepreneur as much as he was a scientist, and his huge lab in Menlo Park employed dozens of scientists at any given time. There were also debates about the legitimacy of some of the patents, debates about whether Edison was a "good" person or not, etc. Nevertheless, a century later we still refer to him and I would wager that we will still be referring to Steve Jobs a century from now. There are not that many people that you can say that about.

Contrary to popular misconception, Edison didn't even invent the lightbulb. http://www.coolquiz.com/trivia/explain/docs/edison.asp

What a strange place this is-dude's body is barely cold and people question other's sympathy and denigrate the deceased. Just bizarre. I know, I know, standard DCUM but still.

Heh, heh. Quick and more bang for your buck at the ITC.

Who cares how many gizmos he created? Someone who denies being the father of his own child and parks in handicapped spaces sounds like a jerk.

People who are as brilliant as he was are a gift to the world. I think it was a selfless act for him to spend his short time on this earth moving mankind forward. He has been compared to people like Thomas Edison -- people whose minds and actions will contribute to society for years to come. How could anyone possibly "regret" that? What, that he missed a few kids baseball games?

I have a hard time comparing Jobs to Edison. Quite a difference between inventing electric light and technology products. Yes, technology has affect society in many great ways, but is it necessary? No. There were other ways to communicate before the internet and computers and cell phones and tablets. People also had more in-person relationships and did more than stare a rectangular screens of various sizes all day.

My point is that it has bothered me for some time how much new coverage the iPod/iPhone has gotten over the past 10 years. Since when does a technology product make national news? It's so odd to me. There are so many more important things to humanity than technology. So much more. And this is from someone who works in IT.

Electricity is not necessary for survival.

We'll ask the whales about that (after we go back to using whale oil for light).

I'm sad for his family. He was too young to die. On the other hand, I hate Apple and all of its crappy products. The fankids are like battered wives who don't even recognize how they are abused because they're regularly given the opportunity to pay through the nose for the next version of the shiny bauble which he promises won't be the piece of crap that the last one was (but it always is).
