DC Public and Public Charter Schools
| A ton of money was spent on Kelly Miller and Sousa as well not just Deal and Hardy. They even spent a good bit of money at Jefferson. They are all on a facilities schedule and that schedule was followed. |
| Walker Jones is in ward 6. It doesn't even have a PTA. There is more to ward 6 than cap hill and Brent. |
| So according to Turque Grey has hired a consulting group from Chicago to look at under enrolled schools and potential charter options. Realistically what is going to happen is the New Orleans model of education- the public school system is supervises a wide range of schools and is only responsible for shutting down failing systems. DCPS will get more successful because the core of the system will actually be more affluent schools that have then circled the wagon. Won't really fix the churn or underlying problems that affect learning for kids with less affluent parents but politicians will feel like they are doing something. |
| I actually think Walker Jones is on the way up too. I bet they'll have a PTA this year. |

I hate the way Rose Barras characterizes parts of the city as "black parts" and "white parts." Has she even visited Ward 5 recently? Or taken a look at demographic statistics from 2010? Some neighborhoods are very racially integrated, or are even inching toward majority white.
And middle class/professional blacks that are "even moving to Brookland"? Please. The neighorhood has had professional black families for a long time. I guess when you want to paint everything in black and white the messy details just complicate things. |

New citywide choice: BASIS DC
http://www.azreporter.com/tt/index.php?id=1677 "Our city has an opportunity to open a school here that will not only get our students up to grade level, but empower them to compete with the best students in the world," says Mary Siddall, Chair of the Committee to bring a BASIS School to DC. Siddall, a DC resident and parent, was committed to bringing a top nationally ranked open enrollment school to Washington, DC. "DC students deserve a world-class educational option," says Siddall, "and BASIS has proven it can deliver."

Stuart Hobson is up for modernization in '12 budget ~$15mil.
Jefferson ~$15mil modernization in '13. Amidon ~$7mil in '12. SW has no political juice - and its schools have yet to be modernized. |
| Amidon got a brand new library and they used a HUGE open space. It is impressive. |
| Walker Jones is a brand new building and beautiful. So the money is not just being spent in Ward 3. |
AGREE Strong neighborhood schools include Maury, Watkins, JO Wilson, Peabody, Stuart Hobson and Brent. |
| Amidon is the most marginalized school in Ward 6 - although that is changing. |
This says it all. |

no one is saying this at Maury. |
Ok, I'm a Brent parent and I have said this. But if my child were at Georgetown Day or Lafayette, or where ever I would say the same if asked. I want the very best for my kid and I am going to watch like a hawk that it happens for her. so what? I hope all Brent parents, regardless of what position they hold in the PTA or whatever, is looking out to get the very best for their child. And if that means a different school, go for it! With Brent's waitlist situation, there will be another kid to take the place and hopefully it will be a better fit for that kid. Do what you've got to do for your kid and your family. I have lots of Maury parent friends and they do seem a bit more "rah-rah" than Brent folks. not sure what accounts for the difference. The Brent neighborhood maybe has a higher percentage of private school attendance, especially with Capitol Hill Day School and St. Peters right next to Brent, so maybe Brent parents are confronted everyday with the fact that there are other options? anyway, to the subject at hand, the only way to read the article is to highlight the quotes, read the highlights, and READ NOTHING ELSE as it is nothing more than racist, groundless, illogical editorialism by Jonetta Rose Barras. |
