| so sad to see the anti-religion discrimination here. please move to maryland, and stay there. poor lord baltimore is turning over in his grave .... |
| It's the proselytizing that most of us take issue with, not the religion. |
Exactly. |
| Ditto. I've known many very devout Jews, Muslims, mainstream Christians, etc. who do not feel the need to convert others. I understand it's part of the evangelical movement, but it's still pretty annoying. |
That's quite a persecution complex you have going. Jesus already died for our sins. You don't have to bleed from your palms every time the subject of religion comes up on this site. It is tiresome. |
Interesting comment. Is that how you feel when other minority groups (because, based on a preponderance of statements and posts, it does seem that being a Christian is a minority group on this forum) state or indicate similar feelings? |
I'm not sure you are thinking of the right Lord Baltimore. Cecilius Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore, 1st Proprietor and 1st Proprietary Governor of Maryland, 9th Proprietary Governor of Newfoundland (August 8, 1605 – November 30, 1675), usually called Cecil, was an English coloniser who was the first proprietor of the Maryland colony. Cecil established Maryland from his home in England, and as a Catholic continued the legacy of his father by promoting religious tolerance in the colony. Forming it based on the ideas of freedom of religion and separation of church and state, Maryland became known as a haven for Catholics in the New World. |
I'm not the poster you are addressing, but I can tell you that EVERY SINGLE MINORITY on the forum has taken it UP THE ASS repeatedly. Repeatedly. I am speaking as a Jew (let's see: greedy, we're all pro-Israel, we caused the wars, we're all rich, blah blah) special needs child (how dare I have a handicapped parking sticker, how dare I be so oversensitive blah blah blah). You are absurd. |
Boo-fucking-hoo. You should be fed to the lions. Then you would know what anti-Christian sentiment is. |
I don't think it was an absurd comment at all. If, in general, DCUM posters view themselves as a well-educated, liberal, tolerant, "open," non-judgmental group, then disparaging comments about entire groups--miniority or otherwise--shouldn't be made or tolerated here. |

We shouldn't try to avoid those people who ignore basic social decency and try to convert our children behind our backs?
There are only a few denominations of one particular religion that engage in such behavior and not all those followers actively try to "save" people. So, it's not really one minority group we discourage, as much as one behavior. If I wanted to convert the kiddies at the playground to atheism, I'm sure the reaction would be the same. |
| Umm, ignoring the crazy in this post. I think you will be fine anywhere in the immediate D.C. area. I live in Arlington, and while I don't have kids in elementary school, I have never had anyone try to save me. Most of the neighborhoods in Arlington and Alexandria appear pretty progressive (at least they lean that way politically). |
No other group tries to convince me that I need to be what they are. Nobody has ever tried to push me into being Jewish, Muslim, black, an Asian tiger mother, or Unitarian. When Mormon missionaries show up at my door I politely tell them I grew up in an area with lots of Mormons and know about their beliefs but no thank you. I may offer them water or a snack. They move on. Same with Jehovah's Witnesses. They don't pretend to be my friend in an effort to score points by bringing me to their church. Nor do they shun me for being Catholic, as has happened to friends of mine in another state. I don't think Christians are really a minority here, it's pushy Christians (who think they're better Christians than the rest of us) who are the minority. Thank Jesus. |

I'm quite Catholic and live in Alexandria. So long as you bring a good bottle of wine and a bit of gossip over to a play date, I promise not to try to convert you! Bad wine, though, and I'll slip you a mickey and start in with the Lord's prayer.
Seriously, though, I'm sorry you've encountered people being so invasive about religion. I woudl really hate that. Welcome to the area! |

Native of this area--have lived in Georgetown, Arlington, Burke/West Springfield and found none to be particular religious.
This area is a complete melting pot---ethnicity-wise and religion-wise. Very few of our adult friends even attend any type of religious services or practice any type of formal religion. It is NOTHING like the bible belt. |
