Move to DC on 150K income?

Check out Olney and Brookeville, MD (zips 20832 and 20833). The commute to DC will be one hour, but you will find large homes with big yards and great schools for an affordable price. This is essentially Family Town USA --- it's the burbs, not the city. But, you will find nice neighbors, great sports leagues (check out OBGC), and a strong sense of community. If you are religious, lots of congregations (catholic, jewish, episcopal, etc.) with active groups. FYI, lots of anti-burbs folks will slam the commute. It is what it is. I do it every day (as do my neighbors). FWIW, I was born and raised in Silver Spring and we left b/c we couldn't afford a nice home in a good school district. Caution: Silver Spring is huge, and lots of the schools aren't great (some are, but you are going to pay a lot for those select neighborhoods).

Not sure these neighborhoods would be a fit for OPs family. Brookland--only for city savvy, urban dwellers. Glover Park-maybe, but it's pretty expensive. Cap Hill-yeah, but in the outer perimeter, which can get a bit dodgy.
Not sure if they're for families who have lived in only in a nice, quiet suburban neighborhood and would be happy living in a ranch houses......just saying.

My suggestion would be a townhouse in Burke or Vienna.
