Holy sh$# my worst nightmare come true. |
| Being born late enough that I graduated in 2004. Thanks for effing up the housing market, older people! Now, even with lots of saving and careful living (and lots already saved), I will have to wait years and years before I can become a homeowner. |
Very sorry about this. Tough situation. |
| Worst mistake was convincing my DH to give up a post doc (that would have led to a FT position) with the govt. so that he could take an academic position at a sub-par school in the south. It took me almost two years to find a job here and now he has got his govt. job back and we are moving to DC anyway. Should have just moved there in the first place. The best thing that has come out of our current situation is that we no longer aspire to be homeowners, so I am no longer freaked by the cost of living. |
Me, three! |

Buying too little house.
No, not buying a house that was too small, but that was less costly than I could have afforded. It was in an outer suburb. The commute killed me, there was little tax savings. I could have stretched a couple hundred dollars more at the time, lived in closer and now would be able to comfortably afford the payment. sold the house a year aog but didn't recoup enough to put a good down payment on something else closer in. |
| Non-investor here, completely ignorant about stocks etc..took the advice of a financial advisor and put a good chunk of savings into mutual funds in 2007, where they promptly lost half their value in the crash of 2008. They are almost back to what I originally invested now, but I'll probably never invest anything again and keep it under my mattress instead! |
| Not investing more when I had a high paying job. Spent way too much on clothes, travel and other crap. Compared to others I think that I am fine, but if DH were to get sick, leave his job or leave I would be in a bit of a pickle with two kids and a $6,000 mortgage payment. |
Happens a lot. |
Is this because he does not have money, or bc he is bad with money? |
Which is why I am holding on to deal life to my very boring GS-12 job. I get to see my kids and if the worst happens we will have something to fall back on. |
Homeowning is not All That. Find a nice little rental in a good school district, invest your mortgage payment and call it a day.

1. Going to law school. Turns out, law wasn't the right career for me. Who knew? But that debt will be around forever.
2. Buying a townhouse instead of a single family home. We could have stretched about $10k above our price range and gotten a SFH and would not have to worry about moving so soon. |
This is exactly what we hope to do. The american dream of owning a home is completely overrated.

My sympathies to your husband. Mental illness can't be easy. |
