Teddy Roosevelt's kids went to Sidwell. He gave a graduation address in 1909 or thereabouts. |
So what ? This is Washington, there are a limited number of private schools. 100 years ago that number was even smaller. The families get divided up and the kids all go somewhere. Gore Vidal went to nearly all of the DC Privates at one time or another ( due to repeated expulsions) . It is not like Teddy Roosevelt moved to Washington or ran for President so that his kids could go to Sidwell. LOL. You don't even know if he was happy with the school. |
And ? Yes it is true : Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon and the Clinton's liked Sidwell better for their kids. From what I hear none of these people are/were particularly interesting company. What was it that the Kennedy's said about the condition of the White House and the cultural scene in Washington after the quote " Eisenhower era" . And Richard Nixon, boy now there is a man of true character for 'ya. One might wonder if he had Hoover look up his girls dates and their parents. I have got nothing against Hill and Bill, but I heard from many a journalist that they are real bores in conversation. |

Totally agree it does not matter one bit which dead celebrities might have sent children to any school. But it certainly seems Sidwell was "on the map" or "on the radar" or whatever, long before the 1990s.
Can we move on now? |
Richard Nixon was Quaker.
Also, please tell me the school doesn't keep a list of "notable parents." That doesn't seem particularly Quaker. |
I'm pretty sure 12:28 is just some jokester who copied her list from Wikipedia. My first clue was "Charlie Sheen." |
Eisenhower Family Phillips Exeter, Exeter, NH, Peacock Military Academy, San Antonio, TX
David Eisenhower went to Exeter. For more on that school, see the entries on these pages for John Knowles and George Plimpton. Dwight D. Eisenhower coached football at Peacock Military College, now closed. Another San Antonio school is Texas Military Institute or "TMI", now "TMI-Episcopal School of Texas," which has reportedly sent more people to West Point and Princeton than any school in Texas history. It is also the oldest Episcopal college prep school in the southwest and dates back to 1893. Those who passed through its halls include the Klebergs of King Ranch, General Douglas MacArthur, Dan Blocker of "Bonanza," Metropolitan opera star Rafael Diaz, Henry E. Catto, Jr., baseball great Ross Youngs, and others. from: http://www.celebrityprepschools.com/part2.htm have fun scrolling through this list |
I'm less interested in the parents of children who attend these schools and more interested in the accomplishments of the graduates themselves. Let's see that list. |

PP has cut and pasted from the Wiki site on Sidwell and, yes, someone has gone so far as to list the " famous current parents" . Parvenu, I know. |
I'm from outside DC. Sidwell was well-known in the Ivy League in the 80s as one of the best day schools in the country. The only DC schools we'd heard of were Sidwell, St. Albans, and NCS. Obviously that has changed but the idea that only the Obamas "put Sidwell on the map" is just silly. |
Ummm, you left out the former head( circa 2008 of Fannie May), at least one nazi sympathizer, and failed to mention that the reason that Al Gore is listed a Sidwell parent is because they left STA after his son( of a sitting Vice President) was suspended by STA for drug use. |
The increase in Sidwell's popularity is not just because of a few POTUS kids and the status seekers who follow them. Sidwell started becoming more popular of a choice in the 70's as, nation wide, interest in single sex education started to wane. Besides that, Sidwell started to attract people for what it is NOT, namely, it is not associated with a Cathedral . This started to become something in demand as demographics in the corridors of power in Washington started to change in the 60's moving forward to today. Were STA and NCS to change their model from single sex to co-ed and change some of their chapel guidelines like Exeter has done, it would be game over because those two schools still have beyond a doubt the finest facilities in this town, high academic standards, and great matric stats. |
Did AG III hang out with Charlie Sheen?? |
