As a lawyer, I believe that people benefit from hearing different viewpoints. The best way to understand an issue and strengthen your argument is to vigorously defend it. Everyone benefits from having more viewpoints on campus.

That said, I’m astounded when conservatives tell me that their children are being brainwashed by liberal college professors. I had both liberal and conservative professors. It was a thought provoking experience but only a moron is brainwashed by a professor’s political leanings. An intelligent kid can think for themselves.

That’s the part where all these conservatives’ arguments about the extinction of conservative faculty breaks down. If you’re not at a top research university, your income tops out at maybe…$250,000? And that’s if you go to a very high paying lac like Claremont McKenna. The funny thing is the best job in academia for all these conservatives is the job they hate the most: administration.

Look at Trump. He attacks elite colleges because it plays well to his less educated followers. Yet, when it comes to his own family and children, they all attended elite schools. The same is true of his cabinet and administration and throughout government. Of course, they know better and understand the value of an elite education. The only super liberal class I took was a women’s studies class to fill a humanities requirement and there were other options, I just chose that one. I think engaging with people from all walks of life as well as learning how to question and analyze is what makes a lot of students come out of school liberal, not the professors.
