| My parents wouldn’t let me apply to schools more than 3 hours from home, and I’m still resentful of them. |
Did you visit MIT? They start their info sessions with a land acknowledgment. Sounds like you would discourage your kid from going there... |
| I'm saying no to Ole Miss and Alabama. I have a daughter who thinks the sorority scene looks super fun. I just can't. We also told the kids that they have a budget of 75K per year. Anything above that threshold is on them. |
Almost all the schools we visited had that acknowledgment. Good luck with your college list! |
When we toured in 2022, practically ALL of our tour guides did this in our northeast/midatlantic college tour. Even though it's perceived as being performative today, I think the impetus to do this came from very good intentions. For me such pronouncements did not sway our college selection at all. It's just a little courtesy paid to those history tends to forget. I respect that, and don't understand anyone who would be so immersed in crude political wars as to be offended. |
No Georgia Tech? |
Sweetie it’s “farther.” |
Ha! My kid is the same (very responsible, has always seemed older than he is, not a partier, chose his college based on major but also ended up choosing the one that was the least expensive due to merit). Curious where your kid ended up. Mine is headed to UMBC. |
It’s close enough. And the girls dress as though it is. |
+1 Hope the MAGA spawn enjoys Liberty. 😈 |
| Cost (including any travel if OOS) & requiring: the school must have the major you’re interested in (and ideally a back up) & coursework that will prepare you for your chosen field, can survive all 4yrs without a car (so nearby housing, dorm all years, or good transit important), and institution must be financially stable |
Not even Maryland? Wow. |
Did they specify by what transportation method? Just looking for a loophole. |
It is hot there. Perhaps, Cornell is a better alternative. |
| No to any public university - we had the means for a quality education and a great student experience. There was no need to go and just be a number, or be OOS with superior grades to in state kids and paying more than the in state kids, or be at a place with middling facilities. |
