UMD Honors vs Northwestern

Kid still often gets asked about which college he attended, & people are impressed with the Northwestern brand. Certainly there are some brilliant students at Maryland & some non-brilliant Northwestern grads, but having NU on the resume seems to generate an assumption of high intelligence until proven otherwise.

That’s the edge you get in a situation like this. How much you value such an edge is up to the individual, but it’s a real thing.

And I agree with what at least one previous poster said…the honors college thing won’t have much impact on getting hired.

northwestern in general does not
result in much prestige in dmv. it sounds like a directional state school

No doubt there is some east coast bias in DC, but this comment reads as beltway stupidity.

hardly. it does not command prestige when there are so many hyp grads in the DC and east coast. NU has high prestige in midwest. It is hurt by location and name

Saturation of HYP grads in no way diminishes the prestige of NU. Or any other Ivt +/T10. And your fixation on the school’s name is bizarre.

No need to argue here. A T10 is a T10 and at T50 is a T50. If you are looking for a great career and big $$ post graduation, opt for the T10. Not sure what the 4 pages are for here trying to compare apples to bananas.

UMD is a great school. My DC picked it over Michigan and GTech. No regrets. Great outcome!

This is a good point.

Northwestern has greatly increased in prestige in the last 2 decades. However, most schools have a regional flavor. If your kid wants DMV opportunities and is right there, can't beat that.

Plus there are times in life when being from a fancy school can make you "too fancy".

Top of the class from state schools can have great outcomes for grad school.

I am OOS but know one Banneker Key recent grad from my state. She went to UMD for journalism and is now with the NYT. Her internships during college & resume were quite strong. BTW, she picked it over Michigan because Michigan doesn't have a journalism school/official program.

Lol. I went to Michigan and landed an internship at the Washington Post straight out of college (I was an English major). Most of my classmates got amazing jobs and many are at the Times. The Michigan Daily was a fantastic school paper and pretty much every newspaper knew it. The offerings at schools often go far beyond what basic classes are taught. And fwiw, I would have picked Northwestern over Michigan any day of the week.

But that's me. Everyone is different. You guys do you. I don't believe you will have a bad outcome at UMD. If you feel strongly about it, go with God.

This is what I would think. No contest.
