Rejections

I think had his gpa been even 4.3 he could have gotten in to couple more… he has 4.1

He has top rigor classes like AP Physics C and Multivariable Calculus BC. But he never took 4 years of a foreign language.

Yes, he is also in a very competitive NOVA high school.

Just so baffled to see the string of rejections come in.

Maybe a waitlist will happen that is meant to be.

What were his grades in these 2 APs? These are hard. If scored a 5 in each then you didn't apply to enough colleges.

Sometimes (may not apply to your child) people try to take these hard APs for the sake of taking them. if you do well they won't hurt you, but if you bombed them they hurt you.

B- in the Calculus and A in the Physics.
He also got a medal in a science Olympiad.

I think as you and a pp mentions he didnt apply to enough of the middle ground colleges.
Regret not applying to JMU as well.

Agree, one of my kids had decent rigor but low-ish grades and had a 3.6 UW, his best SAT score was 1250. Those gpa and sat match.

DC had a 1590 SAT, 4.95 WGPA, stellar internships and recommendations. Accepted at just 1 Ivy, WL in 2 and rejects at others. flagship state schools were either a WL or acceptances. Surprised with the outcome.

Too bad the school counselor didn't sit down with him and review the list.

Why were you surprised? Ivys are a lottery and you just need to hit one.

Agree this was the issue.

Minimum for what? Many kids get into college with lower GPAs than a 3.8uw. The problem seems to be that OP’s kid applied to 2 safeties and bunch of reaches. Why would he apply to VCU and GMU but not JMU? Is OP trolling?

Op here.

Highly regret not having applied to JMU.

UVA came through as a deferral first round at ED results and we then had hope for some positive results for the other colleges then.

yeah you reached. and you assumed the test scores would carry the day. they don't. they never do. DCUM always pops a boner over test scores but they really aren't as important as people think. a 3.58 is as many Bs as As and that ain't gonna cut it.
Anonymous
I thought UVA was our biggest reach and the rest may have been low reach at some ….
thought all wrong of course.

sorry about the typos on my previous post.

Which OOS public did he apply to? All high reaches?

Case Western, Ga Tech UMd

These are reaching high.
Ga Tech and UMd ...

Case is private not public. Though they have a low yield and high acceptance rate, every high stats sends an application there.
Schools like Ohio state should be on his list.

he needed to take 4 years of a language for most schools in hs.

The problem was the GPA. Schools want rigor. But they want students to do well in those rigorous courses. That B- wasn't looked favorably upon even though it was a tough class. I'm assuming he had other Bs if the UW GPA was a 3.5.

You aimed too high. Fortunately, GMU and VCU are good schools and he can always transfer in a year if he isn't happy at one of those.

CWRU acceptance rate is 30%

OP, I'm sorry, but if looking for more acceptances guidance counselor, peers or your own research did you wrong. 3.58/4.1 would get you into 95% of schools. Unfortunately the apps focused on the 5%, however you have good safeties.

Relatively. Not bashing, love CWRU!
