Stop talking about Pitt

If I wanted my child to go to Pitt, they would already have applied, but I don’t so they didn’t. What is wrong with you?

When my first kid went through the application process in 2023, I found this bit of DCUM wisdom very helpful. It doesn't *have* to be Pitt, but the tip to find a rolling admissions school and apply early isn't a horrible one in the crap shoot of the college admissions game. I'm unclear why you seem to feel targeted. Like most things, take what works for you and leave what doesn't. No need to get you pants in a twist.

It wasn't Pitt but that first very early admit was really great

Why, though?

Read the room. In this day and age it is common for kids with GPAs over 4.0 and SATs over 1400 to wind up at schools like GMU, JMU, VCU, and UMBC. And the process is so crazy-making that some strong students worry they won’t get in anywhere. Of course kids are relieved to be in early at an affordable school in the T75.

What’s so bad about the schools you listed? They seem perfect for someone who has a 1400 SAT. (It needs to be said that everybody has a 4.0 so you can net that out.).

If my kid had a 4.0 at a public school in a 1400 I would just assume that they were going to go to one of the schools that you listed and I wouldn’t be anxious about it

My kid wanted an urban campus so that really reduces the pool of choices. When they say "love your safeties", he really loved Pitt. An early acceptance took the crazy senior year pressure off. And lo and behold when he compared all his acceptances and offers, he ultimately chose Pitt (over higher ranked and more expensive options).

You’re answering a question I didn’t ask though.

The statement was “that first early admit was really great though.” aka, rolling admission. Scoring an “early admit.” What is so great about having one in the bag in general? Why are so many people such a puddle of anxiety?

Because of the stakes and the discourse around college acceptance. Because kids put way more work into high school resume curation than their parents did.

My Ann Arbor friend's NMF kid wanted to go to Michigan Engineering but not every kid with 1500+ from Ann Arbor gets in. So he applied to 15 schools. Now he is at Michigan. 14 "wasted" apps. I suppose he might have gone to Stanford if accepted.

This situation is pervasive among kids who are "normal" high stats, high achievers. Yiu can't count on your clever essays and generic excellence to get you in. So having a baseline acceptable plan is a win.

Have you ever had the luxury of choosing between two job offers? It's like that.

+1000

Key is to find a safety/high target school that has rolling admissions or at least lets you know in December. Search and find one that your kid likes and would be happy attending.
Or dont but then dont complain come March/April when your kid has no acceptances and you are scrambling.

Have 2 friends with kids at elite private schools. Their kids applied to 15-18 each. So far only in at targets and safeties. Rejected at all reaches, but still waiting on 3 more (some may have come today).

Most likely their kid will be selecting from a target. It's part of life--when all of your reaches are 5-10% acceptance rates

OP will be lucky to finish the process with her kid still speaking to her. She’s wound tighter than an 8-day clock.

Your kid has no saying? That sounds completely bizarre.

+1. Certain weird ideas regarding college take hold at private schools and then they become a seemingly universal thing.

Tell me you haven't had a kid go throught the college application process without telling me you haven't had a kid go through the college application process.

This post is all BS. Parent here of a senior at Ivy who also had acceptance to Pitt. DC is premed so undergrad doesn’t matter where you go. Pitt offers so much in terms of preparation and extracurriculars for a premed. I would’ve 1000% been thrilled for them to go to Pitt just as much as the Ivy they’re at. Pitt is just so so good for premeds.

Minnesota, higher ranked and offer better merit aid.

Plus it is unique in the city location, good environment, and limited greek life. If you are a nerdy high schooler in PA it is an extremely appealing option

Oddly, seems to be an NYU and BU safety but no one seems to think that way.

People always tout it for its rolling admissions so the kid has something to fall back on... seems like that's the only reason it's recommended and that most people go to their better options.

Exactly! They accept everyone and then only a tiny sliver actually go.
