Where were they celebrating the bday party? It seemed like it was one of Robert’s properties - but why? That whole scene made no sense to me whatsoever.

I know, it was very weird. Unless we were meant to take that as romantic involvement. Could be, especially since it was also odd that Eleanor wasn't present.

I just read this which points out that Eleanor was trying to distance herself from Mary after the fight they had where Mary told her she basically leaches off of other people's families. While they did make up, I'm sure that really stung and this article makes some pretty astute observations about their relationship and Eleanor's efforts to start living her own life with some healthy boundaries.
