| So if you are giving up, what are you doing with a family of 4 or 5? I’m especially curious if you’re planning trips abroad where hotel rooms and beds are tiny…. |
|
I’ve stayed in some fantastic airbnbs. Most notably a whole small house in Kyoto. Small houses are normal in Japan though. It was a great location and had 2 bedrooms upstairs with sleeping mats, bathroom kitchen and living main floor.
Some have been mediocre but I’m happy most of the time - enough to keep using the service. We also stayed in an awful 3 star hotel in Tokyo that reeked of smoke. I’m used to 3 star bring not fancy but fine so thought it would be ok. Tokyo is expensive. We stayed in a super tiny Airbnb apartment in Tokyo and much preferred it to the 3 star hotel which was more expensive. |
| Team hotel. In our last VRBO, the terrace was converted into a shower/bathtub as an extension of the bathroom. If you can imagine that. The photos carefully hid the fact that the terrace had been walled in and a tub was placed in it. We had to be careful not to get water outside the tub and onto the wooden terrace flooring. |
Same here. The thought of hidden cameras creeped me out. |

I hate Ari b and b and vrbo. Beds almost always uncomfortable and I’m worried about creeps with cameras.
But I really really wish it was easier to find hotel rooms with single beds so it was easier to put teens of different genders in the same room. We had a hotel once that had a bunk bed plus additional twin in a second room and it was utterly oerfect. Great wolf lodge is the only other place I’ve found that! Cruises are also good because they will separate a king into two twins. I wish that was easier to find. |
| I don’t get the AirBnB hate. I’ve only had one bad experience in the last ten years and probably 50+ rentals. Having a whole apartment with LR and kitchen is great - hotels feel so cramped in comparison. Since I have insomnia, having a separate place to read and putter without waking my partner is really nice. |
Probably because one bad experience can turn you off for good. My last two were fine but the new trend post covid of cleaning (especially for how expensive it is) really turned me off. I was freaking out cleaning to get out of the door. Rather not nice way to end a vacation. |
Meh. It takes 10 minutes to wash the dishes you've used and strip the bed sheets. I've never been asked to do anything else. |
I only rent from companies not individuals |

I’d love to stick to hotels or managed apartments, but the managed apartments / condos are becoming even more ridiculous that Airbnb with 9 or 10 am checkout (Delaware beaches looking at you).
Traveling often with teens and sometimes with grandparents, we appreciate the space and I also like having a kitchen cause just cannot stomach a week or 2 weeks eating out 3 times a day - both my stomach and my wallet suffer. I stay at staybridge / embassy suites / Marriott / Hilton brands when I can, but also rely on Airbnb / vrbo when these chains are not available or fully booked. Just got back from a week at the beach staying in a wonderful vrbo condo, but also understand that a bad experience would put someone off using these platforms for good. |
