Is Tufts underrated?

BC, BU, Northeastern, and Tufts are all overrated.

Mechanical Engineering? Go to a flagship.

Some engineering students actually don't want to go to a huge flagship...

All the schools that reject DCUM's perfect darlings are overrated.

US News criteria is better suited for some schools than others.

If you value smaller classrooms or professor-student interaction like I do, you might rank W&M far above Virginia Tech, for example. Certainly the average test scores and GPA are much, much higher at W&M, which might confirm my opinion that it is "better." But US News uses a different set of criteria than I would and has them tied.

I, personally, like to look at lists but you have to study the criteria and figure out what you agree or disagree with. Why would you just accept someone else's assessment?

Go UC Merced!

I know a kid who's very happy there

BC and Tufts are underrated. BC > Florida.

lol bc is way overrated nothing special. Tufts has always been significantly better than BC. UFlorida is ranked 30, BC 36 tied with UIllinois. At $95-$100k a year a private ranked in the top 30s is not worth it vs beautiful weather in Gainesville with NCAA hoops championship and SEC football.

We get you are not from New England and that you can recite US News rankings, but people from New England don’t care what you think.

There are people who hate on rigorous private mid-sized colleges for some reason, but Tufts, like BC, hits a sweet spot for many. It has a real campus, its on a transit line into Boston, is at that "just right" size and is notably and nationally known for a few of its offerings.

Agree. Weird campus, weird name, weird mascot, weird colors, weird that it’s a university in the NESCAC, weird that it has a law school that’s not a law school. Overall it’s kind of…weird.

What makes you think that Lafayette is stronger? Not a knock on Lafayette, it’s a great school.

My original comment was mostly a personal opinion. Nonetheless, I might recommend Lafayette for mechanical engineering based partly on the quality of its science lab facilities. This site, for example, includes Lafayette, along with schools such as Caltech, Harvey Mudd, Rose-Hulman and Lehigh — schools I also would recommend for mechanical engineering:

Best Colleges for Science Lab Facilities | The Princeton Review https://www.princetonreview.com/college-rankings/?rankings=best-science-lab-facilities

If a student likes Tufts for its general attributes, however, I'd say go for it, including for mechanical engineering.

These lists oh boy! "Based on student ratings of their school's science lab facilities."

Trinity U - great school, new labs which are wonderful. Better than Rice U's labs? What the what? Zero chance that someone with relevant experience would rank TU over RU.

The last time Forbes created such a list, it included Tufts in "10 Expensive Colleges Worth Every Penny":

I love it. Campus is cozy. Mascot is fine, I love elephants. Light blue is my favorite color. I don't really care about NESCAC so who cares that it's in it. I did read they won the national championship for men soccer so I guess that's impressive. My kid wants to go to college, not law school, so who cares if it has one.
