Dartmouth and Hazing

Dartmouth is an almost impossible admission from the DMV and has one is the 4th highest yield rates of the Ivies, essentially tied with Yale for 3rd. From my kid's private alone there are 7 kids who submitted an ED for 2026 and if past precedent is held, likely one will be admitted.

My non-drinker is very happy. They drank some in high school, decided it wasn't for them and now has a whole crowd of friends like them at Dartmouth.

If your kid is seriously interested in the school, find someone in real life and ask them frankly about their kids' experience. Better yet, have your kid ask a peer. There are plenty around the DMV. I know my kid would be happy to talk and won't hold back on the good, bad, and any ugly.

I am the poster of the "common denominator" reply and I stand by it. I am not trying to discourage applications - if you read my post, I say to just go in with eyes wide open, and do the research. When it comes to fraternities, 100% there are certain kids who will be more vulnerable to abuse. This does not mean I think Dartmouth is a bad school for every kid - my dd's best friend, a queer music prodigy, ED'd there. I very much doubt she is hanging out at fraternity parties, though.

Thanks for sharing the article. I never realized how bad the hazing was at Dartmouth. This is nausea inducing stuff.

As a Dartmouth alum, I find this story shocking and heartbreaking. When I attended in the early 2000s, the school had made substantive recent changes to crack down on hazing, and it showed. I was on a sports team and in a sorority, and the initiation involved optional alcohol consumption, with an emphasis on optional. It seemed like real progress had been made. I was an occasional light drinker, but had many friends who were non drinkers and they all were very happy at the school. Some still enjoyed joining for Saturday night trips to frat row and just skipped the alcohol, while others preferred quieter weekend activities. I think the key for those who aren’t into Greek life was and still is having interests that are catered to at Dartmouth- there are a ton of other great clubs (it seemed like everyone was juggling multiple clubs/activities outside of academics) - the Dartmouth outing club is incredible- and there is significant dorm-based camaraderie and a true sense of community on campus. However, that said, I would not send a kid there who is very prone to peer pressure.

I think part of the point of sharing articles like this one is that the typical info session and tour doesn't reveal everything.

I’ve got a kid (who is currently a non-drinker) interested in Dartmouth. How do your non-drinking kids navigate the social scene at Dartmouth?

Check out an earlier article in Rolling Stone about forcing recruits to eat Vomlets. So gross.

Horrible, but true. Relatives & friends confirmed with them current Dartmouth students that the described practice was real. And this was after the Rolling Stone article was published.

Should read: "with then current students."

You either have an agenda to promote Dartmouth College or a near-total lack of awareness of weekly life at Dartmouth College.
