What are the foreign language trends among children of elites now? What are some considerations in picking a language.

Most of the world doesn't care about Spanish. Spanish is important here politically, but not elsewhere.
Mandarin, Russian and Arabic are the key languages the US State Department would like to cultivate.

I think enough people speak Spanish here now that not speaking it feels like a disadvantage. There was some point about 10-15 years ago where it become clear that it is impossible to find a housekeeper that speaks English.

Think about that for a moment. English is incredibly easy to learn for a Spanish speaker.
The U.S. has decided it is not necessary to learn English, long ago.

Do their children learn English? If so, I guess Spanish speakers will decrease.

Latin!

After taking Latin in high school my vocabulary in English improved tremendously. I also finally understood grammar.

I encouraged my son to take a year of Latin freshman year of college. He did and is now minoring in classics along with studying pre-med.

Most folks realize they can use it in dozens of countries for business or leisure. It’s also the language of great literature, music, plays, and films.

In the Republic of Georgia, I spoke Spanish to man who knew Spanish and Georgian (and Russian) who then spoke Georgian to a shopkeeper and I got a free gift as a result.

You're right, but there is also some truth to the idea that the locations that speak it are often violent and unpleasant to live in and appear to be worsening by the year.

Because none of this matters in the age of AI outside academia. Give it a few years and everyone will be speaking their native language and the ubiquitous AirPod or other device will be translating in real time directly in the ear of the listener, who will then answer in their own language.

I am amazed that higher ed in the US is clinging to FL requirements. Other countries let it go after high school.

US colleges only have FL requirements for remedial students who didn't learn in K-12.

Other countries teach more English in K-12 than US teaches native English speakers any second language.

Most billionaires are English-only.

Non English-speaking elites learn English.

There are more poor native English speakers than poor native Spanish speakers in the world, but geography matters a lot.

Keep in mind, however, that much of the world speaks English better than your child is likely to learn any foreign language.

This. The best language is the one they’ll actually try to learn. The second best language is the one with the best teachers.
