Is there a point at which a higher SAT score doesn't matter?

Raise your hand if you know someone with 1550+ SAT’s who was shut out of the T-20’s. Law of diminishing returns kicks in once the SAT score is above 1450…

False. Every 10 points above = greater chance at a) acceptance at an elite school, and/or b) merit scholarships

Correct

I’ve posted before but will summarize:
- top 10 schools test required don’t care
-top 25 test optional definitely care
- School GC’s care and prioritize your student. This is subjective because it’s missing the biggest part of the application that makes your unhooked student competitive… their story.

outside of T20, i think 1500+ is enough.

our personal anecdote, DD took twice with highest score 1530. thought she was done but college counselor recommended taking one more time to get 1550+ given schools on list. 3rd score dropped, oh well.

she ended up getting into 4 T20s but rejected from 8. accepted to every other T21-60 school she applied. she's happy and thriving and that's what matters.

Data released in SFFA showed Harvard treated 1560+ differently.

Dartmouth report says the same.

Correct.

Is this one sitting, or superstore, or doesn’t matter?

All else equal a 1600 would be more helpful than 1590?

No.

My friends kid is shooting for a top school and retook after getting a 1530 on the first try. Got a 1560 on the second try and stopped. I think they felt the same about 1550 being the cutoff.

Caltech treats them the same. Caltech's braket A comprises 780 verbal and 780 math.

At other quantitative schools like MIT, if there is difference at all, it's very minimal. Both are world class scores.

Does it depend on his high school?

It may depend more on the college. For instance, successful applicants to MIT have very high - often perfect or near perfect - math scores. So it seems to matter there.

For schools going back to test required, it might be the case that very high test scores are now more valuable than they were in the previous five years.

For Chicago (TO), what would be a good score?
