Are our Gen Z sons just different?

+1 my Gen Z sons are athletes, musicians, hard workers who have worked since they were 15, stand-up friends to men and women, courteous and helpful to their grandparents, do their own laundry, cook and clean without being asked to, they don't drink or any other vices like that, they have saved in Roth IRAs, pay their bills on time, AND like video games, mostly the ones that are like on line novels, puzzles/mysteries, or D&D influenced. They'd rather go to a card game a game store than sit on the couch watching football and drinking beer. To each his own.

Men being married in their mid-20s is not something that happens in places with high education rates.

It is amongst some wealthy groups. The yes ma’am comment makes me think OP is southern. If you’re educated and wealthy you typically get married in the south between 23-27. First baby before 30.

The couples that have children earlier seem more grounded and less selfish than those that wait into their thirties or choose not to have kids at all.

The people who make generalized, judgmental statements like this seem to have an agenda.

I don't know. I agree with PP and I'm politically very progressive. Obviously generalizations are usually sweeping and unhelpful, but I've noticed in my friend circle that those who had kids at, say, 37 (or didn't have kids at all) seemed less grounded and more narcissistic.

I see it both ways. I see a lot of kids in our neighborhood who did great in high school, wen to college, now mostly have jobs, and moved back in with their parents. It seems like at least that piece is much more expected. Also, again anecdotally, it seems like there are fewer romantic relationships even if they are otherwise social.

Or they have family help - for example, a friend had all of her children before her husband completed his residency (a very specialized field that didn't start paying off until almost 40, and by then, they were already done having kids, and she couldn't really work between young kids and his work hours). Both families pitched in along the way.

Doesn't contribute - wants to be trained but adds no value. I don't have other Gen Z acquaintances, so I'm trying not to stereotype based on one person, but if I did, I would say they care about work-life balance in a way that skews toward not actually working. I'm sure he has a healthy social life and works out plenty.

sounds like he has his priorities in order. truly enlightened

Maybe. He'll be looking for a new job soon, and when we hire again, we'll be more focused on professional references, like we should have last time, but it was a nepotism hire. Hopefully, next time around, we'll get a Gen Z kid with a strong work ethic, like the ones you're all posting about.

I don’t believe they’ve touched a video game controller since college. They’re not softies. When they speak with older people it’s always yes ma’am and no sir. The younger one has had a girlfriend for 5 years and the other is married. They’re gainfully employed and living on their own. They work out and eat healthy, but still have a few drinks with friends on weekends. They enjoy life to the fullest and never sweat the small stuff.

Everything I read about Gen Z doesn’t comport with our lived experience. It’s not like we’re the parents of the year. Did we just get lucky, or are others experiencing the same thing?

They don't do video games as they all do it on the computer or social media on phones. No, many are like this.

Tell me you don’t read election results without telling me you don’t read election results.
