I am from Buffalo and always say I'm from Western NY. If someone says upstate New York, I know they are a NYC area person. In my experience people from other parts of the state will say something more specific. It's a large state. Saying upstate NY is pretty meaningless other than to indicate you're not talking about NYC area. |
I grew up in Utica -- within NY state, we always referred to ourselves as "central NY" and that was the accepted region to other NYers. But once I moved outside of the state, I started saying "upstate." |
