Parents of Seniors, why are you bothering?

It's baffling. Surely there are Trumpers with kids that are interested in science/stem, right?

There is going to be incredibly limited opportunity going forward in these fields.

I hope they all find satisfying jobs in a factory making stuff that we used to buy for pennies but suddenly have to pay dollars for.

I personally know multiple college stem faculty who's funding has been summarily canceled for zero logical reason. Their staffs of postdocs and techs have been suddenly laid off and I don't know what will happen to grad students in their labs..could be wasted years of their lives.

In the meantime, China is just zooming past the US in electrification, AI, robotics, drones, etc.

At least they know how to do authoritarianism right…they are giving tons of $$$s to the scientists to figure out how to screw the US seven ways from Sunday.

Every single kid in Dc circle had an internship this summer and they all have paid jobs lined up for next semester (TA, research, library). It is not that bad out there, at least at elites

Do you not read the news or look at statistics? This may be your experience but it is not the norm this year.

Our view is that the decisions of the current White House are so damaging and nonsensical, on so many fronts and for so many categories of activity (not just science), that this is temporary, and must be endured if possible. Future administrations, be they conservative or progressive, will probably return to a more rational approach. Perhaps there won't be the generous funding that existed before, and that's fine. But I am confident that in a few years, things will be better than they are today.

And don't kid yourself about the attraction that other wealthy nations can create regarding science education, research and development. We come from those countries, we know. Salaries are much lower than American ones, and the level of funding is low compared to what it was until recently in the US. If you're in an American lab that hasn't been defunded, sit tight. If your funds have been cut and you can't find other sources of funding here to continue your work, yes, you need to move elsewhere. Or change field (which is heartbreaking, if this was your life's work).

IDNGAF that you are sad. Go elsewhere, there will be more opportunities for American kids. US universities should not be admitting or employing foreign students at all.

What more opportunities? It's always been there for Americans. There is/was a shortage of people. Do "American" kids want them? certainly not in large droves at an average American high school.

There is no shortage of people. There is only a shortage of people willing to work for the low salaries companies want to pay. That's why the big push for foreign students and H1Bs. Get rid of them all and there will be higher paying jobs for American kids.

Anonymous wrote:Honestly, why bother with college admissions anymore? Trump is single handedly destroying higher education. If your kid has any interest in STEM, I’d consider international. My kid is in a stem related PhD program and the scientific community is in dire circumstances right now. So long American Exceptionalism.

"Higher education," such as it is, has been on a downward trajectory long before Trump came into the picture.

I completely disagree. Eliminating funding for research is not a reset, it is destruction. I’m OP and I’ve heard about it from my kid, who is seeing it firsthand. My other kid has a major that is more cultural studies related. She fears the courses she needs could be eliminated and she will not be able to graduate. I don’t think that will happen, but then, I did not think we would gut medical research. This is dangerous. It’s thought control and autocracy, not a reset. I’m not some radical leftie. I get that the political correctness bit had gone over the top, but this reaction is absurd.

First they came for the "cultural studies" research money and I said "make sure you eliminate the funding for all their other nonsense majors too."

It's not "autocracy" when the taxpayers are not forced to fund research. It is democracy. 77 million people voted for this.

I don't even know what to say if you think government funding of universities has anything to do with "capitalism", lmao.

No how can you be this stupid?

Project 2025 says the exact opposite, but you didn't read it did you!

Americans are going to lose all benefits from work that is in Project 2025.
Americans are going to lose all injury protections from work that is in Project 2025.
Americans are going to not be able to afford college and their kids will work for pennies ie in Project 2025.

What is wrong with you people? You learned to read in third grade for god's sake yet you didn't read the most important parts of Trump's plan utterly stupid MAGA.

They wrote it all down.

I'm not interested in some Leftist's stupid, dishonest interpretation of "Project 2025" which is certainly not the administration's authoritative program. No matter what you may believe, the Heritage Foundation is not telling Trump what to do.

My son is going to the UK. I don’t think that the US lead will be easily eroded, but the atmosphere is so toxic that he won’t miss it.

No, AI hasn’t “killed” STEM. Trump is killing STEM which will lead to the downfall of this country. It takes a little time. He’s in power so won’t affect him.
Anyone who votes against science research funding should not have access to medical care that results from research (pro tip - all healthcare results from science research)

MAGA is so short sighted.
