Sorry meant US

"often"? More like always for arrivals.

Has anyone ever landed at Frankfurt and actually pulled up to a gate? Because that has never happened to me or my spouse (who was global services for 10+ years).

What camp in Norway? Does your son speak Norwegian? Are the other campers primarily Norwegian? If so the language could be an issue. Yes they all speak english but if he’s the only one that can’t speak Norwegian, he’ll be excluded.

It's for his niche sport, the language of instruction is English. I suspect that the campers will come from a variety of European and north American countries and that English will be the common language.

I will look into the SAS flight when it gets closer because transferring in the US before the overnight flight would be better for lots of reasons. I also wouldn't be opposed to flying with him and going on vacation while he's in camp.

One more note about the SAS flight - it tends to be much more expensive than other routes to Olso. We lived there for several years and I traveled back to the US often. That flight was consistently priced higher.

Frankfurt can be messy for tight connections.

Never board a connecting flight there without being so rushed that I’ve sweated through my clothes.

Tip: Never ever connect in the US if you can help it! Much more likely to cancel or delay. Also, EU based airlines are have higher requirements to look after you if something happens. Also, Reykjavik is still a great airport - I fly through there all the time and it is my favorite. My son has been flying alone to and from Europe since he was 17 for his sport. You can also do Lisbon, for smaller airports, or Dublin. But when I can, I go Iceland.

Final piece of advice - wait until about 2 months before your flight to look and book. The options will change.

When I was 18 I got stuck in Midway Airport for a couple days by myself when that plane overran the runway. I didn't have anywhere to go and didn't have money for a hotel. Was it uncomfortable, sure. Was I unsafe? No. So having lived through a bad scenario as a teen, in general you will eventually get moving and you won't be unsafe.

Not OP, but no that would probably be Canada if curling. Probably cross country skiing or ski jumping (or shooting).

What is considered enough time for a Frankfurt layover? We have a flight from IAD via Frankfurt to Prague and only a 2.5 hour layover.

Once you understand Frankfurt, it really isn’t that complicated. Americans just don’t like it because of the bus gates, which are at many large European airports.
