Never. STEM background, never did a customer service job even as a kid. Cafe sounds like a good place to hang and own than finding a second career.

Oof, good luck.

If you seriously can't weigh the pros/cons of starting a small business and have to crowd-source it on an anonymous forum then this venture isn't for you.

The few we hired, only care about money. Example: they will pick up the singed check, but leave the checkbook on the table as if the new customer needs to put it back where it belongs. They are on the phones, horsing around, or disappearing to bathroom.
With $30-$40 an hour, we still can't find people who care to work.

They wised up.

Get an experienced manager who will do the long hours and handle the employees, unless you want to learn what real work is like. I'll just leave it at that.

The couple I know who did this did all the work themselves, with two other part time staf who were also retired. It's more of a social retirement project -- where they only served lunch because that's all they could handle on their own.
