Will anyone notice that the DC Council is considering tax increases, again?

LOL it's one thing when federal income taxes go up (everyone affected in all states) but this strategy is entirely unsustainable when people can just move across the border to Virginia or Maryland. You can't keep drawing water from a shrinking well forever

Then let them move. Who wants to be in some lame lifeless suburban encampment, spending your life in your car or riding endless red line or silver line trains just to get into the city? No thanks.

The boring-ass gentrifiers have brought Disneyfication and their lame suburban tastes to the city. Tax them.

You mean white people between the ages of 20 and 34? They're the ones who have driven gentrification and made DC a much, much, much whiter city than it was 20 years ago. Sure, tax them but the problem is they don't have much money.

The real problem was the white flight that happened before that and the ongoing segregation and racism in our nation. FIFY

Found the 20-something DSA member living in his mom's basement.

People like you are the reason Trump won.

Right. No one who has lived here for any significant amount of time is confused about who is gentrifying the city. It's white twenty- and thirty-somethings. Those luxury condos you live in? They were built by developers who bought up, and then razed, single family homes that had been owned by Black Washingtonians since forever. That's how DC became the only major city in this country that is getting whiter.

I'm a fifty year old woman who bought a house here 25 years ago and has lived here much longer. Also, the trend for the city to get whiter started in 2000. It's not all young people and it's not all white people. The percentage of asians and hispanics is increasing even faster than the percentage of white people.

Also, Durham NC's white population has increased over recent years.

Additionally Brookyn, NY's white population has increased while its' black population has gone down. Of course, its Asian and Hispanic populations have increased as well, but you've shown that anyone who is not white or black is invisible to you, so you probably don't care.

Those are just the first two cities that sprang to mind, but I doubt they are the only ones.

More bad news for you about your claim that DC is the only city getting whiter: after another grueling ten seconds of research, I learned that Atlanta is also getting whiter, more asian and more hispanic.

there's like 100,000 more white people in DC today than there was 20 years ago. that's far more than the combined increase in hispanic and asian populations. also, since when is durham a major city? do you consider plano texas to be a major city? also, obviosuly, brooklyn is not even a city.

This is pure revisionist slop. Blacks didn’t own those homes “since forever” — they owned many of of them since the 1960’s to be precise. Many of the neighborhoods you are referring to were build in the late 1880’s, representing 80 years of non black ownership prior to the 60’s.

Another revisionist element to what you are writing is that you are acting like these neighborhoods were some black utopia and then the evil white developers kicked them out and razed their well kept homes. The majority of these neighborhoods were the textbook definition of urban blight. My family has owned properties off of 9th and 10th in Shaw since the 60’s — you have no idea what it looked like prior to gentrification.
