Waitlist movement in mid-July

Anonymous
I just got off the phone with one of the Tope SLAC admissions officers. They refused to commit to closing the waitlist. They need to fill every single spot in order to survive. My child is on the waitlist, but honestly, we can’t wait until mid August to change our minds.

how is this possible when most of the top SLACs are need blind?

Can you explain more please?

This is merely to say that the number of international students not getting a US visa in time to enroll for Fall 2025 and hence deferring is significant enough that it warrants its own code in the college’s database. You don’t create a new code unless there is significant enough need.

Few schools that purport to be need blind are totally need blind. They may be need aware for international students. They may also be need aware for second semester admits (e.g., Middlebury or Hamilton) or programs that start overseas (NYU or Northeastern). Most schools are need aware at the waitlist stage because the schools have allocated most or all of their aid budgets by then. They need the bodies, tuition dollars, and whatever other institutional priorities they didnt yield in RD.

Seems Harvard waitlist moved yesterday — a couple of students currently committed to Yale posting on Reddit. Also a Brown waitlist acceptance.

Anywhere else?

Email today from Stanford that selected students will remain on its waitlist until “early August”.

Curious if all 400ish students on the original Stanford waitlist have been offered spots on this extended waitlist as well or not.

Did you receive this message on July 1 already, and this an additional message?

FWIW, DC received this update in the portal on July 1 but no emails at all and no change since then.

I really don't think anyone got off. There was zero chatter online and a bunch of active posters on the various boards. I also think everyone got this email. The kids i know all did and one is a sibling to a graduate. They must have overenrolled to be confident despite continued Harvard uncertainty.
