In MD, College Park is really the only in state option. The other lower level state options are pretty bad while the community colleges are even worse. It’s the one area where I really think VA is the only viable in state school system in the DMV.

So focus on searching for scholarship options, saving more, preparing for loans etc

OP's kid isn't going to College Park from the bottom half of the class at Churchill. OP's kid can attend a different fine state college

a 3.6 gpa--a B+ average-- is bottom half of the class?

At Churchill, 58% of the class of 2020 had an unweighted GPA of 3.51-4.0. 85% of the class of 2025 had a weighted GPA of 3.51 or higher. (This is from the school profile shared with colleges.)

Is this GPA based on the semester grades or the quarter grades? Colleges only get the semester grades (for at lest these last 2 years).

Race is not a qyestion on college applications any more. Is that what you are asking?

That's not true. They can still ask the question.

4.50 Weighted GPA (which is 3.8 unweighted + honors/AP courseload) is below median at Churchill.

3.6 weighted GPA is not getting into any selective college.

Are you poor and downtrodden (but still at Churchill)?

What's in the application packet that is more attractive for admissions than the poorer black students in PG County?

My son volunteers and is part of a few organizations. Though we are upper middle class.

Weighted.

Weighted 3.59 in MCPS? That's really bad. Start at Comm College?

What should it be if you don’t mind me asking?

Honors classes get a 1.0 bump in MCPS and they’re basically on-level classes. A 3.59 unweighted implies a decent number of Cs in honors classes.

What a joke. If 85% of the class is getting 3.5, the curriculum is too easy or they’re just handing out As and Bs.

Yes, that’s why OP’s kid is in a tough spot. He is at the bottom of the college bound kids from his GPA standpoint

OP- Your kid is fine. Please don’t listen to DCUM world. If you kid hasn’t taken any honors or AP classes yet then there unweighted and weighted and unweighted GPA are the same and schools will see the land with most students. Get them to try a honors/AP class or two for Junior and Senior year. Be sure they have good study habits. And more importantly parent the kid you have not the one DCUM makes folks believe they need or should want to have.

What is your basis for saying that? Your words are nice but they are empty words.

NP - there are tons of colleges that will happily accept students with this gpa and even offer scholarships. Maybe not Harvard but the OP didn't specify schools
.
Instead of obsessing over certain schools parents can realize their child has many more options at lots of schools throughout the country.
