Has there been anything in America that hasn't become super selective and competitive?

Jobs in federal government (even previously prestigious ones) will no longer be competitive. Nobody wants those anymore — unless you like writing 5 bullets every week, constantly being threatened with termination for no reason, having benefits and CBAs cut, and generally being treated like crap.

Teachers aren’t being paid enough to live in areas with strong public schools. My sister and her husband both work as teachers for FCPS, but their salaries aren’t sufficient to afford a home in a neighborhood with a good school pyramid. As a result, they use my address so their children can attend schools in the Langley pyramid.

So they are committing residency fraud?

And yet it’s very hard to get into nursing school

No, they live with me, an empty nester who travels a lot in retirement, to save enough money to purchase a townhouse zone for Langley Pyramid.

I'm under the impression that half of able-bodied adults are working part-time as Uber Eats drivers.

And it's always been the case that the only way to get ahead in this country is by grifting and cheating and grabbing your slice of the pie.

Or inheriting money and connections.

My kid graduated nursing school on time with Honors and it cost me $200k even with merit money. And she graduated debt free. And she plans on doing masters in a year or two while going while working which if a good school can be $50k. By then she will be 26. Plenty of time to make back investment.

But someone at 56 thinking of it not a great payback.

Sure, we’ll give you a classroom with zero prep because we’re that desperate for teachers.

You may last a year, but probably not.

And we’ll replace you with the next ill-prepared person who thinks they can run a classroom with no preparation.

Pretty much. Districts just need Mr. or Ms. Right Now to "fill" the vacancy. Actual teaching ability is not a requirement. They are trying to recruit laid off federal workers to become teachers in MD. No experience/training needed.
