Syracuse is what BU was in the early 2000s... decent name recognition, strong specialized schools, but kids can actually get into the school without having top grades or standardized test scores.

A couple of posters are comparing Syracuse to BU.

Uh, no.

Location aside, BU is clearly in another tier in terms of ranking, academics, acceptance rate, etc.

Syracuse, while a solid school, isn't even in the Stony Brook SUNY range.

Nope. Syracuse and BU are incredibly similar (other than location). Syracuse has a few specialized programs (Newhouse, sports analytics, Maxwell) that BU can't match. For general students BU might be slightly better - unclear.

As regards Syracuse vs. publics, top SUNY schools might have better stats. But if you have the money to pay for Syracuse, there are benefits to going private that help bridge that gap. It is a different type of kid. Which has its pros and cons.

Sports analytics? 🤣

Ok.

Uh, yeah, it's got an extremely well-regarding sports analytics program. Sorry that discipline is a joke to you, but I have a friend's kid who went to Syracuse, after being accepted at schools including UVA, got a degree in sports analytics, and is has his dream job for a MLB team.

Each of those schools have long term better prospects, too.

Can you share more about Maxwell? Does your family have recent first-hand experience?

Does anyone know why Syracuse's yield rate is so low?

Syracuse's is 20%.

DS is considering Syracuse as a safety. But it would be for Maxwell. How much more competitive is that to get into than a general admit?

For context, DS has the tippy top stats and ECs to shoot for T20, and our school’s Naviance shows Syracuse as a no-brainer (it’s a big feeder to Syracuse, so lots of data). But Naviance doesn’t show details about Maxwell, and public policy is a big priority (along with huge school spirit / D1 sports.) Also considering Pitt but doesn’t like the more urban campus setting.

Thoughts?

I would not want my younger kids going there unless they are going for a specific reason - Newhouse, or the sports analytics program is quite good. But just general liberal arts - no.

Need-based or merit?

I’m genuinely curious if this a common / well-known thing re merit money?

We’ve been told that applying EA would actually improve chances of merit aid for a super high-stats kid at schools like Wake and Syracuse - assuming the kid truly caught their eye and was “worthy” etc.

Is this not true? Is merit money more likely w/ RD?

Only the truly clueless would make such a foolish statement.

They really are NOT similar
BU is a city school. While SU is in the city of Syracuse, it is campus-driven w/ very little to do w/ the city itself. Syracuse has more school spirit, division 1 sports, and a
fabulous campus.

I graduated in 1990 from Syracuse, and absolutely LOVED the school, and my time there. So proud to have gone there!

1990 grade here. I just posted. Maxwell and Newhouse are much more competitive than other SU schools.

Exactly. It is a great program. Sorry the OP poster's child is a nerd who doesn't like sports.

And worst case, if sports analytics doesn't work out, the skills are highly transferable to other areas of analytics, which is a very important, growing field right now.

With $56K tuition, it does not seem like a poor man's anything.

My high stats kid applied to Maxwell and was rejected. Architecture and broadcasting programs are very good.

https://www.syracuse.edu/admissions-aid/tuition-fees/undergraduate-costs/

Tuition - $63,710
Housing & food (average) - $19,188
Miscellaneous fees* - $ 1,818
Books, course materials, supplies, and equipment - $1,753
Transportation - $796
Personal expenses - $1,228
Loan fees (if applicable) - $67
Total Cost of Attendance - $88,560

For Syracuse?

Oof.

Syracuse doesn't have EA. Just ED, ED2 and regular.
