Vandy versus Duke

ED and RD get in to Duke unhooked every single year from our private. RD unhooked has to be tiptop.

Duke is better than Vandy but I don't know why it is 6th.

Depending on what social science your child wants, Duke's public policy department is unique and really great. Econ is very good also but has become over-run with pre-Wall Street types. Though I'm sure Vandy's econ is not that different in that regard.

Vandy has Nashville which is generally a really good thing. But Durham is big enough to have plenty to do (particularly when you factor in the rest of the Triangle) yet small enough that kids stay on our near campus, which I view as a positive but others might not.

Vandy was historically more southern but that has been changing.

You don’t have a pulse on today’s teen boys. They all want to be on Wall Street. It is at every single school. 99% of my son’s friends want to study business, finance, data science, etc. Not a single boy wants to do computer science or engineering. One wants to be a doctor. One wants to study business and go to law school.

First - how do I "not have a pulse on today's teen boys" when i said exactly what you said - that there are a ton of econ majors who want to end up on Wall Street. The attempted insult wasn't necessary.

Second, Computer Science is ridiculously popular. Check out this link - CS is the #1 major at Duke, and trust me, it's not all girls:

https://facts.duke.edu/

And both Duke and Vandy have thriving engineering schools.

So many people show up here and act like experts when they have no idea what they are talking about. And they are rude and dismissive in the process.

You are rude and dismissive of “Wall Street types.” What is wrong with you? Judgmental. Just pointing out that there are huge groups of walk street aspirants at most schools- Harvard, Brown, Cornell, Penn, Chicago, UvA, BC…

I never said this was unique to Duke - I noted that it also is the case at Vandy. I was just commenting on the department as a whole, and yes, this applies to most schools. I was a Duke econ major 30 years ago who went to Wall Street. It was a lot less pre-professional back then. There were none of these ridiculous pre-Wall Street ponzi scheme clubs where everyone gets a dumb title so they can try to impress the banks with their commitment to finance (when hiring, I tend to avoid these types). Many kids went to banking but plenty did other things, and those who went to banking weren't so aggressive about it. But again, this is not unique to Duke.

The person who responded to me also made a completely inaccurate comment about no one wanting to study Computer Science, when the opposite is true. So clearly they don't know what they are talking about. People who don't know anything come here for good information and they don't know who is accurate and who isn't (especially when they come in good faith and threads get sidetracked by stupid inside jokes about Bucknell and Holy Cross). I cited a source to prove my point - I wish more people would do that.

Anyway, I'm tired of trying to help and getting insulted for providing fact-based information while low information people with a lot of bravado are celebrated and encouraged.

😂

What’s your intention when posting here? If you’re hoping to offer helpful information to those who want it, great. Keep posting. Some of us are here for that, for sure!

But if you’re seeking positive feedback or appreciation, it’s time to take a break. No matter how hard you try, DCUM will never fully validate or love you back. Better to find ways to be “celebrated and encouraged” IRL.

Duke is regarded much higher. Vanderbilt is such a trend. And can u really take a school seriously that people call “Vandy”??? Don’t know any other school with a stupid nickname?

Rip 'em up, tear 'em up, give 'em hell Duke!

US News rankings are BS. I can’t believe people are relying on them this simplistically.

Agree. These 2 universities are incredibly complex multi-faceted entities involving thousands of people and billions of dollars focused on hundreds of goals.

Yet shallow morons keep comparing them qualitatively as if it was as simple as trying to decide which guy is faster, the one who runs a mile in 4 minutes or the guy who runs a mile in 4:05.

Vandy ED1 will be a much easier goal than Duke ED.

Vandy ED1 has like a 25% admit rate. Duke ED is at 11%

Your child will need a 3.9+ UW GPA and a 34 ACT/1540 SAT to be competitive at either school.

My kid got into Vandy (deferred from ED1 to RD), test-optional.
Private HS, non-stem major.

No opinion of the two, but congrats on this awesome decision your child has!

Stop acting like you are some expert. My son is a sophomore in college and has no interest in Wall Street. Some of his friends are star struck with the money and power aspects of Wall Street but many of his other friends have no interest in that sort of stuff.

I think the OP was offended by your comment about being overrun with Pre Wall Street types.

OP. This is not me, but I agree that it is offensive. DS wants to major in economics. I can see him going to the street if he decides to do so. He is the type and he will be great at that. He is smart, personable/social, has great communication skills, well-liked by his friends and works hard. Alternatively, he may want to do a ph.d. Who knows! A lot can chance in four years .

NP: So I think what the poster was trying to say is that the Econ department at Duke (and many other schools) is full of very pre-professional types, rather than kids who are truly intellectually interested in economic theory, etc. That is a good thing to know going in. Not sure why that is offensive?

Not to mention that the generic Wall Street type is pro-Trump and often obnoxious. It is not a positive culture.

What else is there to rely on? Superficial impressions of random people?

Generic Wall st type is pro Trump as opposed to what English majors that were pro Harris. Why are liberals constantly insulting others who have other political positions. Never ending.

I went to both and there’s no way I’d claim one was demonstrably a better school than the other. Nashville is clearly a better and more fun city though.

Same. Nashville is great, but Duke is by far the better school.
