UPenn - vibe with CAS vs Wharton

Anonymous
most Penn SEAS kids were rejected by MIT or Stanford (or did not apply since tehy knew the answer) and thats who they are going to compete with in the job market for their coveted jobs, esp. as the economy slows.....

I'm older so that's def not my experience. Penn is Penn.

But is there a feeling currently on campus that kids in CAS are second tier citizens?

My son is a current sophomore at Penn Engineering. The engineering students think all of the Wharton students are "bricks." From their point of view the classes are too easy and they tend to poke fun. My son took a few classes at Wharton (law and another business related class) and liked it, but they weren't hard. I do think the vibe is that the Wharton kids think of themselves as top of the food chain so to speak. CAS seems to get no love at all.

My Engineer agrees. Wharton classes are known to be easy. SEAS kids are known as the smartest and also have the hardest classes and have higher starting salaries than Wharton.

Why is anyone bringing MIT into the discussion? Nobody was comparing anything to MIT.

That’s nonsense. My kid is at Penn SEAS and has a great internship with an AI unicorn in SV, and all his buddies have internships lined up.

His senior friend was ranked as one of the top 3 Meta interns worldwide and is starting at $450k FT this Summer.

This idea that your opportunities are limited is ridiculous.

+1
UPenn SEAS as well as math and physics students compete very well with all top programs including MIT.
To the original OP, CAS students, even the non-phsyics non-math ones, do very well. Most premeds are CAS and place into Harvard and other T5 med programs regularly. CAS Econ students get hired at the same top finance and consulting firms that Wharton kids do. Prelaw at CAS is highly likely to result in T14 if not T5.

Out in the real world, anyone who tells an interviewer or a new colleague that they went to Penn will find that most people are very impressed.

But people will really be impressed with Wharton.
