NP but the Orioles were the only baseball team in the entire area until the Nats moved in, and the Nats are fairly recent. Cal “Carl” Ripken is popular and beloved in Washington. |
The Washington Senators were here for years and years, and Frank Howard was beloved by Washingtonians for years. Recency does not automatically equal the greatest of all time. |

How embarrassing for you. He chose it because his mother wore it as an Olympian. |
False and very false.
Cal is beloved, for sure. He is not the most beloved WASHINGTON athlete. Huge hockey fan here, but it's a niche sport and so while Ovi will go down as the greatest goal scorer in history, probably not the most beloved athlete. Who is? Depends on the age of the respondent. Could be Sean Taylor. Could be Jayden, depending on the next decade. Regarding the Gre8t, sweater number. Ovi wears 8 as a tribute to his mother, who wore 8 when she played basketball for the Soviet Union. She was a two-time Olympic gold medalist. |

Ovi? Strongly disagree. |
This is true. Real nice dude. |

Katie Ledecky -14 Olympic medals
Tori Huske - 5 Olympic medals so far. |
He personally met with Putin! |
I hate him. |
I agree with these commenters. I personally love hockey although not a Caps fan, but there's no way it can be Ovi given his political leanings. A hell of a player but beloved? Gross. No. |
| I mean, I don't know how you're defining "Washington" here, but Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky have to be part of this conversation. |
