Not defensive at all, not sure what about my comment you found defensive. I’m just pointing out my original point that it depends on what state you’re in (I’m not the poster that mentioned full rides). Obviously the more you shrink that down to a handful of states, the less likely it is that going OOS makes sense. But across 50 states there are plenty of states where it would make sense and be reasonable to go elsewhere. It seems there are some very strange posters here who need confirmation that not letting their kid go out of state is the right thing to do. Because they are quick to challenge anyone who suggests that going OOS could be worth it, could be an upgrade, etc. It’s all just a judgement call based on what state you live in, what your OOS options are, what your kid wants to study and do, and what your financial situation is. If it’s not for you, that’s fine too. |
| No regrets. DS chose UMD OOS w some merit ($46k COA) v WM ($42k) for CS. Likely would have selected UVA but was WL. No interest in VT. |
The OP asked for experiences. No one made any statement that OOS would not ever make sense in every single scenario. If someone did, please show it to me. I must have missed it. |
Yeah but this isn’t a conversation about Putting money into your Kid’s education. The conversation is about unnecessary spending for that education. I mean I were not talking about sending your MIT admitted student to Frostburg. |
| I'll comment on VA. Some kids who don't get into UVA do get into UCLA, UMich and Berkley. Yeah. Those parents are going to pay more, but if the best fit in state isn't an option, why regret sending them somewhere else? VT, W&M and JMU are great schools, but they may not be the right schools for some students. |
| We sent our kid from Connecticut to Virginia Tech. Felt that VT had a better engineering school. Also that it was good for him to see another part of the country, and he loved the campus. At the time the price difference versus instate UConn was something like $10K per year. No regrets. It worked out well. |
Sorry that I told you the truth, which is that some people wouldn’t make a decision based on a difference of $8,750 a year. Some would. That’s okay too. Lot of weird reactions on this thread. |
You are missing the point |
Why no interest in VT? Seems like a decent school for CS. What do you and your DS like about the UMD experience? Thanks |
And I was responding to this question from OP: “In most cases, is that OOS school really that much ‘better’ to justify the price?” In most cases, it depends on all of the things I mentioned. I don’t know why this bothers you. |
Analytics is not your strong suit. Let’s move on |
| No regrets sending my kid to UMD CS over VT, Lehigh, NCState etc… |
Exactly. I’m poster who sent dc 1 to $ OOS and I’ll be honest and admit I think we all got caught up with the prestige and I’m not sure it was so much ‘better’. Dc is fine but we spent a lot of $$. I’m steering dc 2 in a different direction especially bc dc 2 knows grad school is likely. |
Because for many people it isn’t unnecessary. You are paying for a different experience, better program, better career outcomes, etc. My niece from Indiana ended up at South Carolina. She pays more though not that much after merit. I don’t think the school is better but she loves it and wanted to get away for school and into a different environment. Her parents can easily afford the difference so they don’t mind. |
I get that you can only handle one answer to this question for some very strange reason, so agreed we should move on. |
