Its just that its in Pittsburgh...

Pittsburgh is a feature, not a bug! I take it you haven’t spent much time there in the last 20 years? It’s a great little city!

Actually, urban schools have shot way up in popularity with this group of young people. It’s part of the reason why NYU, USC, Northeastern, etc are so popular.

Not if you’re not a city person to start with. A lot of people don’t want an urban school.

My DC is weighing same decision. Curious where you landed - we visited Pitt and liked it a lot but not seeing any available visit times at VT before we have to decide.

NP. Our DC had the same decision and chose VT. Loves it there!

Our kid had same choice and is choosing Pitt.

Stronger program for biomed engineering and they were better with merit aid.
Both schools seem to be amazing for school spirit and happy kids. Can't go wrong.

OP here. DC changed their mind every day this week but has landed on Pitt.

DC decided they liked the city setting for both social and business opportunities, the ability to stay more than one year in the dorms if desired, and the seemingly less intense Greek scene.

They ended up giving us a little money so cost was the same as VT.

I’m sure they would have been happy at VT, too - liked the campus, reputation for good food, and has friends going there.

I went to Pittsburgh for the first time in my life this week and it was awesome. Beautiful parks, tons of museums, great support for the arts. The kids at Pitt looked happy. (Not so much at CMU, though.)

Keep checking. Call admissions.

Both DCs are at CMU and are happy as they can be. But this is not about CMU. They both love Pittsburgh and find it easy to navigate. The food scene has improved a lot over the last 10-15 years with lots of niche places. Both kids do venture from CMU to Pitt area often on the bus (free for students). Only complain I have the crazy roller coaster like weather in Pittsburg during fall and spring. The Jan/Feb can get a bit biting cold. Both kids have learned to layer.

FWIW, VT has a complete different vibe.

Even if you can't go to a planned event can't you just go visit to walk around, get a sense of the vibe, etc.? That could be very helpful.

Assuming your child does end up at Pitt, be on the lookout for purchasing the sports package. I think its $150 for tickets to all football/basketball games, to sit in the Oakland Zoo with the other Pitt students - promise your kid will love that, and get used to 🎶Sweet Caroline🎶 "Let's Go PITT" because it will become their favorite

Whenever we visit our Pitt kid in fall, we try to attend a Pitt and a Steelers game, in spring a Pirates game (gorgeous stadium on the river), etc. FYI, Pitt soccer and volleyball goes pretty far every year as well. And if your kid wants to play, there are club level and intermural sports as well

I’m sure they would love that!

PP. You're welcome. I'm an alum and just recently watched it. Even though it's older, it does a good job of giving the vibe of what's there. Particularly inside some of the big cultural institutions.
