UMD - Spring Admission

Anonymous
I know lots of FC kids that are friends with my son, he had no idea half of them were FC and no one there cares, parents and their egos are the only ones who care. They are students like any other.

Insulting is the high stats kids being denied any kind of acceptance at all.
My kid will probably not be admitted because of the high school they are graduating from. But same stats graduated from a different county they probably would be in. As a MD grad, I am insulted. We’d jump at a FC offer!

My high stats kid was also rejected. I am interested to know, did your kid's rejection letter mention anything about your alumni status? Mine did in a very poorly written sentence (the entire rejection letter was poorly written). There was no reason to include anything about my being "loyal alumni", and it felt as if that was the reason she was denied. My son got in a few years ago with lower stats and less ECs and not as good LORs, we are baffled. (we are in a high performing school in AACo).

DP - I wish they would leave out the loyal alumni line, that makes it worse! We are a year out from the rejection and the sting is less now that our kid is vey happy at their current school.

I would say don’t rule out Spring unless there are very practical reasons to rule it out. I know lots of good students who accepted the spring admission. If you are in-state the cost difference between UMD and other OOS or private options is likely pretty big and quality of education/outcomes may not be different enough to justify the cost difference. The FC option to be on campus in the fall negates a lot of the typical issues of starting on campus in the spring. Now if doesn’t make sense, like you have a direct admit to a program elsewhere that might be difficult to transfer at UMD or you want something not at UMD like a smaller school/LAC then that’s different.
