I don't think stating average height in other countries is helpful...presumably OP's son has been raised in the US with some semblance of an American diet.

Genetics are always helpful. Everything involved genetics. We are just touching the surface. If genetics weren’t important why even mention the mother and father’s height.

What’s the problem? No, I don’t think your son is completely done growing, no what endocrinologist projects. He will very likely be somewhere 5’7”-5’9”

It’s so nice to see how many people here know so much more than a specialized doctor.

Predicting height is a guess

He will probably grow more from what you’ve described. But it couldn’t hurt to encourage him to get into weight training. I know a guy that height (in his late 30s) who looks hot and super strong.

Maybe if you gave the average height of Asian Americans.

Sometimes kids end up shorter than both parents
I am 5’6” DH 5’7”
19 yo DD 1 is 5’8” finished growing by 15
16 yo DD 2 is 5’3” her final height, got her period 2 years ago and hasn’t grown in the past 9 months, it never occurred to us to consider medical interventions.

The doctor didn’t predict the height. The doctor told her that the growth plates were closed.

It would be most helpful if the OP would give more information. Caucasians and Asians don’t have the same height average. Some Asian countries have taller people than others.

The pediatrician told them 5'8" was the predicted height.

The endocrinologist told them the growth plates were closed and that he'd remain at his current height of 5'3".

Because 5'3 is a perfectly reasonable height for a girl. Your DH Is short, it makes sense that one of your kids would be short..

Genetics, not diet. Japanese people are also genetically shorter.

I don't think genetics exist in a vacuum without other factors at play. Diet, environmental factors, etc impact height. That's why I don't think looking at the average height of a man in another country is really all that relevant.

DP here. I think it’s mostly genetics and maybe some diet/environment but not much. My family is Mexican ethnically but living in the US for almost 100 years. Yeah, we’re still shorties. I’m 5’ and grew up in the Midwest around tall people. We’re all still 100% Mexican ethnically but 100% Americans otherwise. Still short.

Anonymous wrote:OP we had a very similar office visit with an endocrinologist at Children's National. I asked for labs to be run and was denied that as well, (which is ridiculous IMO) based on an almost closed hand x-ray for my 15 year old. We were also all upset and don't really feel like our son is finished growing. Based on our heights, charts show him growing to 5'10" but he is 5'5". We ended up seeing Dr. Nicolas Cuttriss who is out of network but did put him on an aromatase inhibitor and he ran lots of labs. It has only been 6 months and we need a follow up but at least he didn't completely close the door on things. My son's puberty stage sounds very similar to you sons.

This matters less than his own growth curve on charts. Has he been on a growth curve to finish at 5'11" or 5'5"?

+1
Go to Hawaii. See tons of ethnically Asian people living lifestyles that anyone in their countries of ancestral origin would consider to be American who are short. Go to North Dakota. Observe similarly American lifestyles led by German descendants who are tall. Genes play a huge roll, whether you eat beef, drink soda, etc. or not.
