Who has changed their minds about religion on this forum?

This woman is a climate scientist and a Christian . People can be rational, critical thinkers and spiritual. The view that if one is a critical thinker, they can not also believe in the spiritual realm would show a lack of critical thinking.

It shows that she doesn’t use critical thinking when it comes to supernatural powers.

I think what some of you are objecting to is those who are anti-theist. I don’t like them either — unless they can make the case what harm does religious belief do?

Well then you should post those arguments here because the theists here to a p*ss poor job of it.

Just as it was claimed above, that “the internet has been one of the biggest support mechanisms for those seeking to lose the burden of faith”, so it is also a resource of rational, cogent argument in defense of Christianity.

Again, please present it, because I have never, ever seen one. Present one, the best one you know.

The life and work of Tim Keller which is preserved forever on the Gospel in Life website. There are 30 years worth of the best sermons ever given about Christianity, why it is both beautiful and radically different from any other philosophical view of life, and why people should doubt their doubts. Keller’s sermons are so intellectually deep yet connected to the problems of today. He wins the mind and the heart. It is a rare combination.

I say this as someone who identified as an atheist or agnostic for a long time before I found Keller. He literally changed the entire way I looked at the universe in one month.

His highly successful church in NYC started with a base of zero members. He found a way to make Christianity relevant and meaningful in one of the least likely places on planet earth and the many conversions there are a testament to the way he lived out his faith and connected with people.

It sounds like Tim Keller as an excellent and convincing speaker. That doesn't necessarily mean that Christianity is real. It does mean that he built up his church financially.
.

No, of course not — but he makes a very strong intellectual case that it is real. I would highly recommend listening to his sermons before dismissing Christianity.

I hope you're not saying that Tim Keller would be better than Jesus in selling Christianity. Lots of people can talk a good game. Keller might be a dynamic speaker, but there's no way that he's superior to Jesus, whom Christians are supposed to worship.

No way I'd consider religion because some preacher gave good sermons. It's either real or it's not. and it's not.

This is hilarious! I never said that, not even close!!!! I posted my comment in response to someone asking for an example of rationale arguments in favor of Christianity. Tim Keller’s sermons and books provide excellent intellectual resources explaining Christianity. That was my only point. I am not even saying that you have to agree with Keller. You might not. But he makes strong intellectual arguments.

No real Christian would ever in a million years claim to be “better” than Jesus. My life is so riddled with sin, flaws, and shortcomings. Jesus lived the perfect life. I don’t think I am better than anyone, let alone Jesus — in fact, I wake up every morning so incredibly thankful that I am a Christian and that I have HIS record before God, not my own. It’s the most astounding thing.

How would one use critical thinking when it comes to the supernatural?

Like this:

Hey, someone is making a claim there is a supernatural.

Let me evaluate based on evidence and reason!

Ok, there really is no evidence that anything supernatural exists. Therefore there is no reason for me to believe in it until there is evidence, at which point I will change my position.

/aaaaaaaannnnnnd…. Scene.

+1. Sounds like PP should watch some debates with christian apologists and renowned atheists. I've watched hundreds....still don't believe. As a matter of fact, the actual debates, hearing both sides, is what convinced me.

How do you think?

Thank you for this example of judgemental atheists on this forum. I know plenty of "normal, rational" people who are not atheist. There's so much black-and-white and Evangelical-Christian-focused on this forum.

Are they rational when it comes to the question of the supernatural?

Please demonstrate the evidence for that claim you are making.

----Silence ---- because there is no evidence for the supernatural

What evidence would you need? Evidence for the supernatural would not be like evidence from a naturalist perspective.

The bias I’ve seen on this forum has driven me further away from religion. I’m generally a “live and let live” kind of person and I try to assume the best about people. But this forum feels toxic. What I know about what Christianity is supposed to be, and what supposedly Christian people are showing here…it’s a wide gulf.
