Maryland's population is increasing.

From the US Census

July 2024 population estimate: 6,263,220
July 2023 population estimate: 6,180,253
April 2020 Census: 6,177,224
April 2010 Census: 5,773,552

Census numbers aren’t really that reliable these days. They include illegal immigrants.

Yes, the Census counts people who live in Maryland, who make up the population of Maryland, which is increasing.

I bought this house 14 years ago for $500k and my taxes were under $5k. Today they say my house will selll at 900k and my taxes are almost 11k. The recent sale in my neighborhood sold for $695 but was assessed at $810k. County just making shit up.

I’m so sick of this state.

This thread is about taxes. Illegals aren’t paying property taxes. They do increase the need for tax money though (they’re very expensive to educate in the school system, they result in more people on the roads and using parks etc) which is why people leave the state. More people using resources but they aren’t paying for them equals increased taxes for the Americans who do pay them.

Says you. But you're wrong.

The point is that people are house burdened and tax rates should be lowered to help taxpayers afford staying in their homes.

Two potential options:

1. I'm sure you could find someone who will pay the increases in your property taxes in exchange for you giving up all increases in your property value when it's time to sell your house. Heck, I'll take that deal. Is this something you're willing to do?

2. You can get a reverse mortgage to help pay your property taxes.

Finally, please name a single place in this country where your property tax stays the same even as your property value goes up.

Again, this is an exceptionally stupid thread started by someone who hates Maryland because it is people complaining about something that is very, very good for them -- their property value going up. It's a truly enviable position to be in to own a home and have it increase in value, especially the dramatic increases we've seen these past few years. Many people are now priced out of homeownership, and in the face of 20% increases in property value, amounting to HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of dollars, people are complaining that their property value has gone up by a couple of thousand. It's hard to imagine a complaint so stupid.

Then both of you (and others) should leave. Please do, because there are many who would by your home at its current value and pay their property taxes (for schools, potholes, fire and police and more) without whining.

Not when you’re talking about tax revenue.

People are people, even when you're talking about tax revenue.

The first PP was clearly talking about tax paying people. Of course illegals would want to come to a state where there are lots of services provided free because the people who actually live there and pay taxes are taxed to death.

“Illegals” live in property that is taxed, moron.

The title of this thread is "New real estate assessment rates are released from State of Maryland"

But then the OP posted a press release that doesn't use the word "rate" because it is only about property values having gone up. OP, did you actually read before posting? Or is your Nova inferiority complex so deep that you thought you had found the ultimate Maryland hit piece and so you rushed to post it without reading?

Our property values have gone up because Maryland is a desirable place to live, and we're supposed to be disappointed by this?

That's everybody. Everybody pays taxes. All people pay taxes. Even extremely rich people who commit legal and/or illegal tax dodges pay some taxes.

If I were actually paying the same rate that wealthy people do then I wouldn’t be complaining. Alas, that is not the reality of our situation. Wealthy people are scamming us all.

I support the Republican* tax policy of a top marginal income tax rate of 90%.

California holds taxes and it really hinders the market. No one feels like they can move if they know their taxes will skyrocket to market rate. It’s like rent control. Versus here, you know the taxes will still reflect the value regardless of where you live.
