Water is not always flat - there are waves. There are white caps. There are days when the water is as still as a mill pond. When you are water skiing, you go from side to side and you can jump the wake. You can ski on two skis or you can go slalom. You can go barefoot. The boat driver can vary the speed. I don't think you've ever been water skiing. |
| At some point in your 40s/50s/60s you are probably going to find that taking a 3-4 runs up and down the mountain is all you have the appetite for, and for those 3-4 runs, you spent unjustifiable dollars. |
| I'm with you sister. I have zero desire to ever go skiing. Went snowtubing with my kid years ago, and it's just not fun. And it's cold. No thanks. |

I just retired (F, 63) to the mountains -- I love to ski, both downhill and x-country. My kids, now in college, love that they can come home on breaks to skiing and mountain-biking. I'm the best mom ever, LOL
It helps that I have never liked hot weather, nor am I a couch-potato. I do plan to take up golf in the summer. |
I wish more people felt this way. Leave the slopes to those of us who love it! (we have already bought our retirement home in Vermont. 6 years to go!) |
Which mountain area? It's my dream to live in the mountains at least half the year in retirement! |
All of Vermont is a dream. |
| Our kids chose to go to school in the mountains, due to our family's love of skiing and other mountain sports. After spending 2 years in the dorms, our kids are thrilled that we bought them a "kiddy-condo" for their jr-sr year / our family vacay home. Very similar I guess to those parents whose kids go to college in Florida or Arizona. |

Such a weird thing to ask about.
Haven't you ever noticed how different people enjoy different things? Why should they need to justify them to you? You shouldn't feel obligated to justify your favorite things, either. Me, I happen to love physical exertion, cold weather, and nature. If you don't, that's fine with me. |
|
So you don't actually participate in either but need to make a post about why one sucks. WTF is this point of this?
What is YOUR leisure activity? |
This person's also never been surfing or white water rafting. Or wild swimming! |
|
1. Cold doesn't bother me.
2. I'm high-energy, so feeling physically exhausted at the end of the day feels good to me. 3. I like zoning out in my head as I ski cross-country and/or listening to music 4. Three hour drive to spend 2-3 days skiing for 8 hours a day is worth it to me. |
| It's just too darn expensive. |
| Aside from the expense and the freezing cold, it just feels so dangerous to me. People fly down the mountain, some in more control than others, and ski resorts don’t do a good enough of policing the out of control skiers. I got sideswiped once and fell and it was so scary. The skier kept going (out of control) and didn’t stop until she barreled into the orange safety mesh at the bottom. Literally could not stop herself. |
| Skiing is a blast and I can’t ski. I just tumble and scrape my way down the mountain. It’s beyond me how someone can’t see the appeal. |
