I didn't know you could be deferred from ED2 and put in the RD pool. So, that means they sent you the deferral notice in late Feb. and accepted your kid in late March? As for stories, my niece was rejected UVA ED1 and got into Wake Forest ED2. |
Yes, that’s what happened. |

Deferred Vanderbilt ED1
CCO was pushing ED2 - did not end up doing it. Admitted to Vanderbilt and Michigan (EA) and 2 other T25 in RD….. Don’t ED2!!! |

Popular private school choices for ED/ED2:
Brown (esp if male) Vanderbilt WashU U Chicago (E0, E1 and E2) Northwestern Tulane NYU Popular ED choices for public colleges: UVA U of Michigan (new this year) |
| DC got an email from Villanova and BC to switch to ED2. He did not. Was admitted to both places in EA and RD, respectively. |
| It’s different if you’ve been rejected from your early school versus deferred. |
My kid was successful in ED2. Had applied and received acceptances to a few EAs, but wasn't ready to pull the trigger on ED1. Later he changed his mind and decided to ED2. Two of his friends had similar experiences. |
| My kid was deferred on ED1. I tried to push him to ED2 to be on the safe side. He refused. Ultimately, he was rejected by ED1 but was accepted by many schools, including where he is now, which is by far better school than the one he ED1. |
Duke maybe, Vanderbilt no. Vandy ED1 is around 25% AR, Emory ED2 is 12%. |
So, are you saying that Emory is a more difficult school to get into than Vanderbilt? |
|
Are most ED2 admits to selective schools female? And then male in RD to even out class?
Trying to make sense of what we’ve seen at our private over last 2 cycles with ED2. It’s hard for girls in RD universally. Also have been told no shot at Vanderbilt RD unless Val/sal; best bet is ED2 and deferral to RD. Is any other school in the lower half of T25 like this? WashU? Rice? Emory? |
Please name the schools. Thanks!! |
Vandy RD is at a different level from WashU and Emory. Vandy: 3.3% RD acceptance rate. WashU and Emory: 8-10% RD acceptance rate. Vanday and Chicago are similar, RD is nearly impossible. If you are sure about Vandy, ED. |
What if you are deferred from your ED1 to RD....then do you roll the dice on Vandy ED2 (esp. if not tippy top of class) assuming you'll get the deferral to RD? Assume Vandy is your absolute #2. |
I think the answer to this depends on whether Vandy is a close #2 to your kid's ED1 school, or if there's a big drop between #1 and #2 and also whether the ED school's deferral means they are a contender or if it's a school like Harvard or MIT where everyone who is not accepted early is deferred and a deferral does not signal anything about the strength of the application. |
