But I just want to point out that Trump does not have a mandate in the traditional sense of the word. An electoral mandate is when a candidate wins by a large margin. The last time we had a mandate is when Reagan prevailed over Walter Mondale. Reagan got 58.8 percent of the popular vote and 525 electoral college votes. Mondale got 40.6 percent of the vote and 13 electoral college votes. We are too divided as a nation these days to have mandates. Elections have been and will probably continue to be very close because we are so divided.
