GDS High School Assemblies

I can ask our DC when they get home. Was your student texting you? (Um - follow the cell phone policy much?) Because your post was during the school hours.

It was an outside speaker. GDS platforming that view and not the opposite is literally a contributing reason to the mess we are all in. I’m not catasrophizing.

Ask your high schooler at GDS how many of the boys in high school are Trump supporters. It’s well over 50 percent of my kid’s HS friends (the boys). Well done GDS.

Not sure when your child graduated, but GDS does now have conservative speakers come in periodically--I believe there is even a student club to work on sharing alternative voices. None of my son's friends are Trump supporters and if they were, I wouldn't blame school beyond the fact that GDS encourages students to have an opinion and find their voice.

My son's English teacher this year has balanced assignments on persuasive writing/speaking that cover political speeches by both Harris and Trump and consider their speaking style/words chosen/impact on the audience.

Does GDS bring in some extreme speakers? Yes they do and my son sees that for what it is. I use it as an opportunity to have good conversations with him about what they said and what he thinks. We knew what we signed up for.

GDS parents here -they have had a FOX reporter as a guest speaker too at the assemblies; I think there is more of a push to bring in balance.

FWIW - a lot of the boys have become quiet Trump supporters at GDS, but would not say it out loud, because they know their opinions are not acceptable at the school. It is normal for kids to rebel against previous generations, and the rebellion against the old people at GDS teaching the type of stuff as at this assembly, is quiet rebellion and thinking independently/open to Trump.

And feeling like their community thinks they are bad people when they haven’t done anything to deserve it. Especially the kids who have been there for many years. The new ninth graders have a better perspective.

Yes they had a Fox reporter last year - that was the only balanced speaker in the last year. I don't believe they have had any speakers with non-identarian views this school year.

The Trump support amongst GDS boys is pretty loud when those boys are hanging out at my house. At least I hear it. At school they may be quiet about it. And yes, it's common amongst boys everywhere but to see it at GDS tells me none of what they have tried to teach at assemblies has actually worked for the plurality of the HS boys.

What did you miss when they spoke about it during your admissions process? Who were the assembly speakers?

GDS will always follow the lead of the progressive elites. Right now those elites are in denial and fighting to hold onto their leadership positions but the internal reckoning hasn't happened yet. As the DNC changes so shall GDS.

You are exactly right. GDS tends to be a lagging indicator of where the DNC elites are pointed. Can't wait to see the working class rights version of GDS in 18 mos. WIth a bunch of high end cars in the student parking lot

My son goes to GDS and we see first hand that among his friend group that in their words are " sick of DEI calling them racists".

The plus side is that these GDS kiddos are learning to be critical thinkers, they aren’t drinking the cool-aide…the assemblies get eye rolls…. More Fox people should be brought in so students can hear all sides.

No, if they are older, they are learning to distrust their parents and their school. If they are younger and more malleable, they are learning their school and their parents think they are bad people.

Exactly. I think they stopped using terms like patriarchy and toxic masculinity officially in the last year. It doesn't stop their assemblies programming from getting speakers on the "DEI Grift Circuit" from being speakers nearly every week.

"But we had a Fox News speaker once..." Come on, GDS. Do better. Take away assemblies programming from the DEI office.

Stop the stupid clubs vs. affinity groups designation (clubs get nary any budget but affinity groups get big budgets) - see student paper article today

You reap what you sow. You have a HS full of (yes full of) boys who were raised in liberal homes, went to GDS for liberal values, and were called toxic masculine and racist for 2 years. And you jam DEI assemblies EVERY single week. What do you expect will happen?

Part of the problem but whistling past the graveyard and pretending to be part of a (fake) solution.

Meanwhile as a parent, I have to undo the stupid boy rage concocted because they can't program assemblies without the DEI office agreeing on each one.

This is why more long time GDS stalwart teachers are talking about leaving after this year. Just watch. These are beloved teachers across subject areas who feel stifled in their ability to present balanced views.

Meanwhile, as a parent, you knew what you were getting into and send your kid there every day anyway. Have you actually gone to the school to complain? You need to be part of the solution, not a bystander.

We keep going over the same ground on this thread. You keep saying I knew what I was getting into 15 years ago when I chose to send my kids there. It was not the same school. Sounds like you disagree.

DP actually. GDS has been on this trajectory for at least 12 years which is when we first looked at it. You didn’t see it back then? How could you have missed it? The thread keeps going over the same ground because it is hard to see how you can complain when you have taken no action to either leave or try to right the ship.
