This is a great response. |
I was a high school All American and NCAA finalist in track. In high school I was told I could be a great wrestler after beating our varsity guy in PE as a 9th grader. I said no way. Wrestlers are really tough, and in fantastic shape. They could easily meet military running standards. Track was much less strenuous, particularly if you had a great kick. I would float for 70 percent of many races. Can't float for a second in wrestling. |
Wrestlers are the most fit athletes among kids who participate in hs sports. What a dumb statement. Try training with them for a single practice. |
NP - It sounds like he is doing the right things and knows it is a long shot. Especially in relation to the service academies, remember that things can happen that are out of his control. I have seen health issues, even minor ones, derail kids' dreams of attending a military academy even late in the process. And one guy who had a growth spurt the year before applying that left him too tall for his dream of being a Navy pilot. My advice would be to keep encouraging your son about USNA, but spend an equal amount of energy (or more, given his personality) on encouraging him to consider what else will make him happy if it isn't an option. |
