Have you considered Loyola Maryland? Could be a good safety option close to home. We recently toured and were impressed!

OP here, and thank you for this! Could you say more about what you liked?

Beautiful campus with city access, nice size with 5,000 students, warm student body, personalized classes with attentive professors, lots of study abroad opportunities, strong liberal arts program (don’t have to declare major until sophomore year), and we like the Jesuit ethos and philosophy even though our kid isn’t religious. They also have really nice dorms and laundry service—those two things stood out to our prospective student. It seems like a hidden gem locally and we are giving it serious consideration!

We are still in the dc area but don't want to say. Where my kid goes has nothing to do with your kid. I just think American is overpriced for what you get.

Not only overpriced at $76k for OOS ,but also ranks 105 on USNWR

It has been jumping around. Was like 80 a few years ago, 105 last year, 91 this year.

I had a DC who seriously considered American and I was getting on board before he chose elsewhere. Seems like a fine school that can set up a student for future success if you can fund it.

The one girl I was in HS with who went to American was a total dud, socially, academically, intellectually. DUD.

She still lives in DC and sometimes works at Politics and Prose, moving stock from the back room to the shelves.

They have invested a great deal of money in science and research, new building and labs. Not the same school it was ten years ago.

OP again, and thank you for this! I had no idea of the size, I thought it was way smaller. This sounds very promising.

And thank you to the people who are providing feedback on AU. I had no idea it was so expensive (I probably should have looked at that first). It's probably still worth a visit, even unofficially, but it sounds like it's not a super likely fit.
