I grew up in Alberta, too. Steak was a treat in the summer. Now, we order a side of beef every spring. Steak is what we have when I can't think of anything else. It's so easy on the grill or smoker. |
It was ceremonial growing up - steaks were expensive and rare (ha - pun intended). Now it's not a special occasion. Not sure of our class ($200,000 HHI). We have steaks weekly. |

I know of people that did this, but I saw it more as a lower middle class thing. My family never did it. We celebrated with French restaurant style.
Knowing what we know now about dangers of eating red meat, I’d be insulted if someone suggested a steak dinner to celebrate something in my family. We celebrate by going to an Indian restaurant now. |
+1 People here are really impressed with themselves. |

Boomer. Grew up MC with UMC pretensions. Now UMC or UC by wealth.
Going out to a steakhouse was celebratory growing up and when I was making business trips. DH likes prime rib better so we try to find places that still offer that. At home I do small rib racks or we get chateaubriande meat from someplace in the Midwest and freeze them. I still have one left he wants me to cook for my birthday, lol. |
| We only do steaks for special occasion really mostly because I feel a little guilty eating it. My teen son definitely views it as a special thing and when we are on vacation, he eats a ton of it. When we were in Rome, he basically alternated between steak and lasagna. |

Steak is an ingredient for a dish. It should not be an entree.
A large piece of meat is dog food, not an entree. |
| In our house, it's not "celebratory" but it's also not an everyday meal. It's like a Sunday dinner level nice, same as a roast. |
| If you’re throwing a backyard gathering, you have to be rich to serve dozens of guests expensive cuts of grilled beef. Hotdogs and burgers cost nothing. |
Woof. |
| I put fried chicken and steak into the same category. |
