GMU is a fine school but I think we have a lot more GMU than in the past. Is this a money thing or academic thing?

It could be both and nothing wrong with it. This year grad has some low income families.
GMU is a good school, you can stay with parents. You can save alot of money.
And really, not all families think that undergrad school is worth $250k!

There are all kinds of scholarships for STEM strong URM students.

That's not at all true. I went to MIT so was about as outstanding of an applicant as it got. I applied to tons of scholarships and got around 10K which reduced the money I was allowed to receive for financial aid. Absolutely did not benefit me or my parents in any way. All those lost hours...if I only knew.

I received only two full-pay tuition offers: my local state school and an out-of-state school. Both were over 50K students and getting into majors was super competitive. I didn't want to be a number at a school. So I paid $$$$$ for MIT.

This is the thing nobody tells you about scholarships, it reduces your financial aid dollar for dollar.

Way way higher than 11.
Instagram only post so far less than 100 from 500 kids, lots of kids with excellent colleges acceptance do not post there.

It always easy to put the highest standards for someone else but not for yourself.
Is your kids get free ride to MIT too? Thats what I thought!

I was referring to relative numbers, not absolute. I know it is out of 90.

The point is Virginia colleges should ideally be enrolling more of these students.

What is interesting is you can practically tell how they rate the schools by the number of likes. Harvard = 418, Princeton = 358, Duke = 324, Michigan = 318., CMU = 300, UVA = 200, etc.

Virginia Commonwealth University 340
USC 269

A lot of social media is about the popularity of the kid.

I am more struck by how aside from a small number of kids getting into princeton and harvard, the rest of the class destinations looks about the same as a base school

Perhaps, but read it more carefully. The VCU admit is guaranteed MD program admission and Presidential Scholar, the most difficult admit in the State of Virginia. USC is much more esteemed by high school aged people than older people.

You can’t conclude anything by just from 20% post on instagram.

For sure more headed to GMU in class of 2025. My kid (TJ senior) thinks it has more to do with the fact that new admissions standards resulted in more lower income immigrant kids whose families want them close. And many of those kids got full rides. It’s a perfect arrangement and GMU has good programs for tech kids. GMU may not be selective, but it’s a good school.

This question is asked so many times on this board, you can’t possibly expect it not to receive joke responses after a certain point. TJ students are going to the same places they always are. If you really want an interesting conversation, come back next year and we can see where the first class selected with the new admissions process ended up.

Pick almost any question and it has been asked ad nauseam on these boards. Scroll along if you don’t want to help, tell the person exactly what to search for, or answer it. You look like the jerk.

NP.

Jerks who really hate TJ are numerous on DCUM, I’ve concluded.

Just this thread alone shows the hatred: the OP asked a simple question but page of consists merely of mean-spirited attempts to make dumb jokes.

DCUM mostly hates TJ it seems.

but it's been ~20% for the last 4 years and this year seems different.

The left hates TJ. The concept of some students being "better" than others really bothers them. It's like we are questioning the value of any kid that doesn't get into TJ. It's mostly projection.
The rest of us are bothered by the new admissions process.

You could actually tell a lot from 20% sample size assuming they are randomly selected. In this case, the students need to take the effort to create it and opt in, so I would bet it is not random.

but it's been ~20% for the last 4 years and this year seems different.

This is just basic human nature feeling, it does not have anything to do with the left or the right.
Same as AAP, same as college admission.
