Who pays $70-90k for a car? Or high end brands?

Not us. We buy Hondas.

People have different priorities.

I mean life is a series of choices.

We are paying for an Ivy next year. I was a typical MC kid who was told only in-state, no private universities. I didn’t want my own kids to have that same limitation. Next generation and all…my husband and I do better than our parents.

I was grateful, but always a little upset as a top, top student that was my only choice. We didn’t qualify for aid.

Would you only pay it for an ivy? Would you pay it for USC? What about UMiami, Rochester, Villanova? Is there a line where you'd tell your kid no?

Depends. Has to be a reason and plan. Not just weather, football team, etc

That is beyond stupid for undergrade unless there is a learning disability.

Who spends that? We can afford it but who spends that?

Over half of the students at most top schools, that’s who.

Saying you buy a Honda means nothing as they can easily be over $50k or more.

W&L offers the full ride Johnson scholarship to 10% of the incoming class. You have to apply by Dec 1st (but can apple RD) and write an additional essay. They recruit some really top stat kids this way that turn down T20 schools for the scholarship.

-I’m guessing a good majority of the families at our prep school.

My child had a 4.8 wgpa 4.0 gpa and a 1580 SAT. He went to The University of Alabama on a full ride scholarship for National Merit Scholarship recipients. He graduated and is now at an Ivy League law school.

not a SINGLE one offered any merit aid (no matter what their website said). We don't qualify for any need-based FA.

He did write emails to a few schools after acceptance, basically said nicely: your are SOL.

Full-freight $90k/year.

I find you have to go lower, lower---he was offered $25k year for 5 years from a T60 school. And he got into all top in-state schools.

Well mine is at an ivy and got into multiple T10s and also got a full COA merit scholarship at a T25….unhooked kid full pay/did not apply for aid since not close to the cutoff income. The “named” nationally know. merit scholarships are rare at top schools but they do happen. Ivies do NOT have merit , just need, but other top schools do. Some people receive them.

A top 10 uni or any ivy or Williams/Amherst /Swat: Outcomes and peer group. Those who have attended often know and have no problem letting their kids go. PhD ,Top law , top med pull from these schools more than other schools, even a small notch down(T15-25ish). These schools are almost the entire list of MBB target schools. These schools feed into quant jobs. These schools have intensely intellectual peer groups that challenge kids to reach their max potential. One can have the same outcome for some of these paths from another lower ranked school, but it is much more common from the top schools.
The path is wider and paved from these schools.

Huh? Half the students at ivies and the entire T30 and top LACs are full pay, and many others are full pay 90k for “lesser” schools. Lots do it. It is not rare. Almost the entire prep school crowd does it. Why wouldn’t you, if you can afford it and your kid gets into one, especially one that is factually more likely to result in a better career and connections?

There are some schools that offer limited full tuition scholarships, but generally these do not cover room and board. Room and board is usually given on a need basis and those awards are taxable. Some scholarships are given for specific academic areas but often you have to apply for them.
