Eleanor Roosevelt, Dolly Madison and the others mentioned here were definitely accomplished women. But if we are going to discount Hillary's accomplishments by saying she wouldn't have gotten them if her husband weren't president, couldn't the same be said of Eleanor Roosevelt and the others? Would Eleanor have been a delegate to the UN if not for FDR? Would she have gotten such a big microphone via her newspaper column if not for FDR? Would she have given a press conference if not for FDR? It goes on and on and on. If Hillary is to get dinged because she wouldn't have had her accomplishments without her husband, then all the other first ladies need to as well. |
I love that Eleanor Roosevelt was once the mystery guest on "What's My Line?"!
For those not familiar, this was a very popular game show in the 1950s that had a segment where a celebrity, usually a popular actor or singer, would come on and a blindfolded panel had to guess their identity. They would sign their name on a chalkboard when they walked on stage. So one night in 1953, out walked Eleanor Roosevelt: https://youtu.be/0Ew82Ae_N9g?si=MB4A-KDUxpRD0Iqa&t=865 |

True. There are a lot of factors making it an unfair competition. Also for a First Lady/First Gentleman , standing by and supporting leader of the nation is the real job, it doesn't matter to nation if their law firm or tech start up is doing great or not. |
Wow!!! American women have come a long way in the last 50 years. Seriously, who are we to judge Saudi Arabia? And we never had a women president, even India, Pakistan and Bangladesh did. |
That helped. |
Helping your spouse get to the White House sure is a bigger accomplishment than teaching political science in community college. |
She didn't have a young family to focus on while her husband lead the nation. |
Having Bill is like having a double edged sword but it mostly helped her career. |
Why JB? |
In her own way, MO was a very successful First Lady. She supported her spouse and held the home fort like many spouses of ambitious and successful men (and now women as well). She did what her nation and her family needed to make things work. |
First Lady/First Gentleman, specially with young kids, need to be the anchoring rock for the White House, that's the role the choose. Presidents are people and need that to dedicate decades of their lives to get the job and then perform it well. |
The first gentleman won't be married to a woman. I don't see our country ever electing a woman as president. |
