Bad review about FCPS first grade

Movies during lunchtime are great for middle school! The kids are all looking at their phones and it least a movie is a communal screen instead of hundreds of individual ones.

Sooooo much screen time in our elementary school, KMES. And now a portion of math is being sacrificed to “coding” in 3rd grade, which will likely contain almost no actual coding and really just be an excuse for more mindless “educational” screen time.

And a million standardized tests that are also done on computers, and yet parents don’t get the results until months after the data ceases to be relevant or useful.

I honestly think my kids are getting a worse education than I did at their age.

One of my kids did coding in 3rd grade (as an elective in the elective block, though, at a different ES). It was actually pretty decent instruction in Scratch with legitimate projects taught by our school-based technology specialist. I was pleasantly surprised as a computer programmer myself.

Not that I think it should be replacing the 3 'R's, but it wasn't bad.

I have a HSer and my overall impression of FCPS is not great. Hindsight being 20/20- I wish we had gone private.

My kids are in HS now, and I wish we'd gone private during Covid and stayed there. Schools were ok before Covid. I'm also a substitute and the amount of screen time in elementary is ridiculous.

OP - consider Montessori for early grades. There are no screens.

We switched to private and are SOOO happy to be gone from FCPS. The amount of time on screens was a big issue for us. At our new school my 4th grader hasn't even been on a computer yet. Its all notebooks, folders and hand writing from lectures.

We are not in Langley pyramid but a mess here too. A lot of screen time probably so teachers can deal with the behaviors and oversized classrooms.

This is such an odd post. True students are on Lexia. There isn’t any customization of the penguin and STMath, so what are you talking about? Indoor recess occurs 2 to 3 times a year. They are never movies during lunchtime. And kids can go to the library at least 1-2 times a week to get a paper book.

It is true that there’s increased technology in schools nowadays, but your post is clearly an exaggeration.

Yes. Your neighbor's child's experience is the experience that ever. single. first grader in the entire Fairfax county school system has. All first graders in FCPS are doomed. You need to pay for private.

My kids - 3rd and 6th - have laptops at school but are only on them for ST Math and Lexia maybe 30 minutes a day. They do not bring their laptops home. Ever. If that seems like too much screen time, then you are SOL.

Mom of 3 FCPS graduates to include one college graduate and two college students. If we had to do over, we’d have gone private. Oakton HS.
